Chapter one

“Elena! Elena! Elena! Elena! Elena! Elena! Elena! Elena!”

I heard Lucy whisper

I looked down to see her green eyes piercing through the dark to look up at me.

Not again I thought. She’s too little so come with me. Lucy is only 9, and it’s no shock she wants to come to the subway with me..again. She has been asking every night for a month now.

I want Lucy to live a normal life, or as close as she can get. It’s hard to try to pick up the pieces. The pieces that my mom shattered when she took comfort in the bottle. When that happened, I found comfort in singing. I didn’t mean to get addicted, it just happened when I sang to my sister when she was a baby.

“But Lana!”

My sister whined, just as she had the night before

“Your too young. It's not safe, & you have school in the morning.”

I snapped at Lucy

“Well, I'll tell mom!”

She whined again

“Go ahead, mom doesn’t care!”

Both of our voices raised, since our mom’s deep slumber resembled a coma.

It was a lie though. Mom really might care. But I couldn’t be sure. She’s never been sober enough for me to get to know her, let alone ask her if sneaking out to make extra money that she lacked, was okay. She doesn’t know that the extra money in her purse comes from me. I keep some of it with me, because my mom is selfish. She struggles to pay the rent for our tiny basement apartment, because she splurges on alcohol and a cigarettes. The money I keep with me goes to food for us. I get really upset thinking about it. But life goes on, just like the trains in the subway. I slung my guitar on my back, and opened the door to a long night.
