“Thank you!” I called
out.
I walked into one of the rooms I used to know so well with new
eyes. Everything seemed different as I walked in by myself, not
direction someone here.
Slowly I placed my open notebook on the music stand and took my
place at the guitar seat. It only took five tried to stop my
shaking nerves. Once I began feeling comfortable, I recorded the
guitar music for one of my songs. I added other sound effects in
the next half hour and then it was time to record the vocals. Music
flooded through the speakers of the headphones. Not just any music,
but my music. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and sang. As
soon as I got comfortable at that, I opened my eyes. The rush I
felt made my feet lift off the ground. Singing made me happy.
Singing made me feel like I wasn’t just another girl, but
someone special. I looked around the outside room. There was my mom
standing with a man. I stopped singing. Then it
clicked.
I threw my headphones off and walked to them,
cautiously.
“H-h-uh,” I stuttered.
“Hi Mariam,” the man smoothly said. “What were
you working on in there?”
My eyes shifted to a light behind him telling me that they could
hear what I was singing in the booth.
“You heard that?” I questioned.
“Yeah. It sounded amazing. I actually was in need of a
writing partner…I’m not feeling really inspired
lately, but I think that might change…” he smiled and
looked down. “So what do you say?” he looked back up at
me.
“Is it even possible to say ‘no’ to Travis
Garland?” I joked.
“Apparently it is!” he joked back.
“Well those people must be insane!”
Travis smiled at me as we set up the recording studio for two. Five
hours later we held three completed duets in our
hands.
“I guess I’m going to have to come back to shoot a
video for this…” Travis cheekily
said.
“I don’t know…am I worthy enough to waste more
of your time?” I joked.
“I think you can waste a while lot of my
time.”
I smiled from ear to ear. Travis reached for one of my
hands.
“I am so happy I met you…honestly you have this thing
about you that just unlocks my brain. Do you know how amazing it
felt to have words just flow as easily as it is to
breathe?”
Red filled my face. I remembered the poem I wrote about him. It
rested in the safety of my notebook which lay five feet away.
“Actually I do…” I grabbed the notebook, opened
to the page, and handed it to him.
“Oh Mariam! This is amazing! I never knew I could make
someone feel that way!” his face lit up.
And that’s where it all began. For the next five years, we
talked over the phone, skype, text, email, letters, and he even
tried to fly out at least once a month just to see
me.
“Five years to the day,” Travis
mused.
We lay outside in my backyard, just looking at the stars. It was my
birthday. My eyes were closed in happiness. I just softly agreed,
unaware on the minutes just flying by.
“Mariam…?” he said with question in his
voice.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Thank you!” I called out. I walked into one of the
