Come && Save Me

Chapter 1

"Come on, Amber!" My best friend Kyra shouted to me. We were at the sunny beach of Malibu, California. It was only the first week of summer. Kyra's mom took us here for the summer to celebrate us finishing Middle School and going to High School next year. California has the best waves out there, perfect for surfing. Kyra and I are huge surfers. We surf anytime we possibly can. Where we live, in no-wheres-vill Ohio, so we can almost never surf. I grabbed my board, and followed Kyra out their huge beach house door and onto the beach.
"Bet I can beat you there!" I screamed.
"Your so on." Kyra yelled back. She charged, with sand flying behind her. I sprinted after her, all the way down to the coast. We looked at each other, both knowing what to do, and we ran into the ocean. The cold water sent shivers up my back. Once we got far enough, we saw a giant wave coming our way. I looked at Kyra.
"1, 2, 3, GO!" I shouted. We both turned and place our stomachs on the board. We kicked and we moved our arms so fast people could've thought we were having spazzums. The wave approached us, and I stood up, and cruised the wave. I felt like I was on top of the world. I looked around, and I saw that Kyra had missed the wave, what a shame.
"Amber, look out!" Kyra screamed as if she was scared. She pointed over to the right. At first, I saw nothing. Then, I realized what she was pointing to. It was a shark. What am I supposed to do? Should I jump off the board? Should I stay on? Kyra threw her tiny stomach on her surf board and swung her arms back and forth, trying her best to get away. "HELP, HELP!" She screamed. I stood there, on my surf board, letting the wave bring me along. I didn't know what to do! The shark came closer and closer. By now, it was only about 8 feet away. I couldn't jump off now! It was too close! The shark swam under my board. I breathed heavilly. Should I jump off now? Before I could think that I should do, the shark used all it's might and threw my board in the air. I flew, and fell hard into the ocean. I tried to come back up, but the current was so strong, it wouldn't let me. My mind went dizzy, I couldn't think. Was I falling asleep? Wait a second, where am I? All these questions that I didn't know how to answer. I became very sleepy, and I drifted off.

I woke up with people hovering above me. I saw Kyra, Kyra's mom and dad, but the one closest to me was a boy I didn't quite recognize. He had blonde shaggy, adorable hair with bright green eyes. He looked about my age. He had no shirt on, just swimming shorts. He was soaking wet, did he just go swimming?
"She's breathing." He said.
"Thank goodness!" Kyra's mom Mary said. She knelt down next to me. "Sweetie, are you okay? Do you remember anything?"
"W-what happened?" I stuttered.
"A shark came and you fell off your board. You were drowning, until James here came and saved you." Kyra said. I looked at the boy, James.
"Thanks." I said to him. "Are you a lifeguard here?"
"No. Just a 14 year old boy who likes helping pretty girls out of the water." I blushed while everyone else laughed. "Well, I'm not a lifeguard yet, for now I'm a lifeguard in training." He continued. James reached out for my hand and helped me up.
"Thank god your okay!" Mary yelped. I smiled and hugged Kyra, Mary, and Kyra's dad, Tyler. I thanked James again, and Kyra pulled me away.
"Make a move!" Kyra said to me.
"What?" I asked.
"With James. He's sooo into you!" Kyra said. I rolled my eyes as we walked toward the beach volleyball court. I turned around and saw James running over to us.
"Wait. You never told me your name." He said.
"I'm Amber, and she's Kyra." I said.
"Cool," He said, "Come back tomorrow, I'm off. We can hang." He said. He wants to spend time with us? Maybe Kyra was right. Should I make a move? He was super attractive.
"Yeah, sounds great! See you tomorrow!" Kyra said. James waved goodbye and ran back to the ocean. Butterflies waved through my stomach. Maybe California is even better than I expected it to be.
