Today, my family was in the parking lot of a restaurant, pulling into another parking lot to get on the road, when a guy comes up to us, waving his lit up phone. My brother (driving), rolls down the window, and asks "Hey man, are you okay?"
The man had been in my home town for four hours and lived over an hour away. Out of money and very low on gas, he started asking people for money, offering his phone in exchange. When my brother pulled $2 (all we had in cash between me, my mom, and my brother) and handed it to the man, he said "Sorry I couldn't give you more, but that's all I have right now."
The man replied "Anything us helpful. Thank you for being so nice. You are the only helpful people I've asked today. One man told me to go kill myself." A few more exchanging if words, and we were off.
Two things for me came from this story.
1. I am proud of my brother.
2. People can be so conceited that even when a 30 something year old man, looking awfully tired, having a string of bad luck, and worn quite down asks for any amount of money, even just a dollar, will turn thier heads away, some even saying "Go Kill Yourself."
