"I knew this girl," he started, "She had green eyes and a golden heart."
His rough hands searched for mine and once he found them he intertwined our fingers
and held my hand tightly.
"She was gorgeous. Still is, actually"
I was about to interrupt his story. Tell him she wasn't. But he squeezed my hand and I shut my mouth.
"Something happened, though. This boy ,with black eyes and a steel heart, he.. he messed with her."
I could feel him squirming. He didn't want to talk. But he was, and I didn't understand.
"He said things he thought were true. Things that hurt her. It turned her eyes as black as his and
it dimmed her golden heart."
He bowed his head and I wanted to hug him, but I just couldn't.
"What he said wasn't true. He's sorry for lying. He wants her to know that he does love her.
Always has. Never knew. He's stupid, y'know."
I let his hands go because this was a mistake. He didn't love me. He didn't know how to love
So I did the only thing I knew how and he did the only thing he knew how.
I ran.
And he let me go.
