life of the party
chapter 25
*Mara's POV*
We were all sitting at the cafeteria in the hospital. Me, Audrey, and my ex John, who I was still not over. "How are you holding up hun?" I asked Audrey. I had Just told her how Jake was on the phone with John while driving to meet him at his house, and had been hit by a drunk driver. John had called me right away, (I was touched he'd thought of me.) and I had texted Audrey to meet me at the hospital. "Okay" She said. Lie. I thought. Jake still wouldn't be out of his surgery for another forty-five minutes, and Audrey was worried sick. John wasn't doing much better. "He will be fine!" I assured him and Audrey. "Hey Audrey I wanted to say sorry." said John. "What for?" Audrey asked him. "Well, I know you and Jake's breakup was our fault." He said, meaning him and me. "It's fine guys, and we're kinda back together now." she said blushing. "Audrey that's great!" I said. "And besides, It's not your fault you're such a good friend defending me." I said. "About that, Mara we need to talk." said John. Oh great, here it comes. "John do we have to? I already know you were going to dump me, or did I not make that clear?" I asked him. "No, we're talking." he said grabbing my hand and leading me outside the cafeteria.
We walked across the street and sat down at Starbucks after John bought me a coffee. "So, out with it." I said. "Mara I'm sorry. I was never going to dump you!" he said. I wasn't buying his crap, but as he looked up I allowed myself a small triumph at wearing the necklace he got me. "How did you even hear me say that?" he asked. "And where did you get that necklace?" he asked. "You want to know John? Because it's the same reason I'm not buying any of your crap. I was at the restaurant early and I heard you talking to Greg through the kitchen doors." I spat. "Mara, Greg was drunk! I told him I was meeting you there and he came telling me to dump you! I was just trying to get him into my car without him making a fuss! I've seen him drunk before, the only way to get him to do what you want is to agree with him! I knew he wouldn't remember what happened the next day, and I had no intention of dumping you Mara!" he said. "Wait, you-you never meant to dump me?" I asked choking back sobs. It's a good thing the coffee shop was mostly empty, because if it were full people would be staring. "No, Mara I would never hurt you like that- I'm so sorry." he said coming around the bench and hugging me. We stayed that way for a few minutes, our hands intertwined, until John suggested to go back to the hospital. "Aubrey!" I said just remembering how freaked out my friend had been. "We'd better go see how she's holding up." I said, and John and I walked back to the hospital hand in hand.
