I sat on the couch eating a Rice Krispy treat and watching MTV with my feet kicked up, showing off my newly manicured purple sparkly toes. I was dressed in some jean shorts and a lacy tank top for the barbecue; I really wasn’t trying to impress anyone. My brother and dad were chilling in the kitchen waiting for my mom to be ready.
Then I heard her stomp down the wooden stairs and she gave me a look over. “Decent. You all ready?”
When we arrived we went around the yard to the back and spotted the Ferm family all outside. Linda saw us and ran right up to us and said with a giant grin on her face, “I’m so glad you all came! Brent is just finishing up grilling the steak.” She led us to meet the rest of the family and I quickly recognized the boy my mom always talked about, Dylan.
I must admit Dylan was cute, okay fine hot. He had blonde hair that settled his forehead, like Nathan Sykes from The Wanted, except blonde obviously. When I approached him he didn’t seem to notice, too busy texting, I guess. Linda clapped in front of his face to get his attention and when he looked up our eyes met and he quickly stood up to introduce himself. Linda walked away leaving us away from earshot of everyone else.
“Hi, you’re Jess right?” Dylan asked as he smoothed his flannel.
I nodded sheepishly, “Yeah. Dylan?”
He flashed me a pearly white smile, “Yes ma’am.”
I opened my mouth to start up a conversation when I was interrupted as Linda squealed, “Jess, come meet everyone else!”
I refrained from rolling my eyes at Linda’s voice, and walked over to greet Brent, Linda’s husband, Kim, Dylan’s highschool senior sister, and Jared, who happened to be the same age as my brother, Hunter. They all seemed like really nice people.
Dylan walked back over to me and gave a little half smile, “So when’d you guys get here?”
I couldn’t help but smile back, “Around noon I think, when’d you move here?”
He took off his flat brim hat and flipped his hair and put it back on and replied, “Before the beginning of freshman year.” God, his hair flipping was so sexy. But before I could reply he jutted in, “Do you want to sit?” I nodded and he pulled me out a patio dining chair. What a gentleman. Dylan sat across from me and whispered, “My mom’s crazy, believe me I know.”
I cupped my hands over my mouth to keep from bursting out laughing and made a huge grin. “Just a bit, but you know, it’s cool,” I joked as I flipped my bangs back behind my ear.
He smirked, “So you got a boyfriend back home?”
My heart sunk. “Yeah,” I replied, not making eye contact. “You got a girlfriend?”
Dylan raised his eyebrows and took a sip of his Coke. “Long distance, aye? My ex and I tried that; broke up a few weeks after I moved, too hard. But at the moment right now I don’t.”
I nodded, “Sorry that it didn’t work out.”
He shrugged and gave a half crooked smile, “Actually it was a good thing, I mean there’s a lot of other girls here. Dated a few of ‘em actually, but none of them were worth dating for more than a few months.”
I leaned back and crossed my arms. “Player, huh?”
Dylan furrowed his eyebrows and shook his head vigorously. “No ma’am. Just none of their personalities were worth dealing with for more than a few months. Never found quite the right girl. Know what I mean Jess?”
I nodded approvingly, I knew what he meant. Girls most of the time are pathetic drama starters so I knew where he was coming from.
He adjusted himself in his chair. “So you and your boyfriend, how long-” and then his mom cut in, interrupting him.
“Foods ready guys!” Linda called to us.
I stood up along with Dylan, but tripped over my flip flops and nearly face planted on the ground but I felt a strong grip on my arm and pull me up before I could. It was Dylan’s arm, ugh of course.
I blushed and he let go after I was steady on my feet. “Thanks,” I murmured as I fixed my tank top and walked over to get food. Stop embarrassing yourself klutz. Though, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dylan…smiling.
After we ate some steak the adults hung out separately from the kids. Of course, Hunter and Jared ditched Dylan and me, so we were stuck alone together. We sat by the edge of his pool and submerged our feet in the cool water.
He cleared his throat. “So do you play sports?” He asked politely.
“Soccer. What about you?” I replied looking up so that we were face-to-face.
Dylan relaxed his shoulders and smiled. “No way, me too! Well, soccer in the fall, baseball in the spring.”
“That’s crazy, so does my boyfriend!”
“I know, it gets hectic. And cool,” he replied. “So I’m guessing you won’t know anyone that’ll go to our school do you?”
I shook my head and let out a joking laugh, “Nope. I’m going to be a loner.”
He tapped my foot with his in the water playfully. “Not with me there you won’t be!” I giggled. Then Dylan stood up next to me, and he held out his hand to help me up. “Want to go for a walk, Jess? I know this cool little trail to the beach and don’t worry my mom and dad don’t care.”
I shrugged, why not? A little walk won’t hurt. It’s not like anything is going to happen.
