DRIVE ME CRAZY
Chapter 1
Thump thump thump. My heart was beating so loud I could barely hear my own breath coming, ragged and shallow. Why is this so hard? I thought to myself for the thousandth time. Why am I scared by something that some people find so enjoyable? Suddenly, I was jerked out of my thoughts by an all too familiar screech of rubber on pavement. I looked to the front seat to see my sister, Jean, quickly throw down her iPhone.
“Sh*t!” she cursed.
“Maybe you should be coming to class with me,” I managed to tease, though my tongue still felt strangely dry within my own mouth.
“Hell no! I did my time and am so done with class for the summer! Personally, I don’t know why you don’t just take a driving class during the school year like most normal people. Nothing can drag me away from the pool this summer!”
“Jeanette Patricia Miller,” I began, as I knew that she could not stand her full name, “That is why I will someday be a doctor and you will probably be my assistant. That is, if I hire you. I need someone competent, you know.”
“First, don’t call me that! You very well know that I hate my name. Second, I’m just glad that you are carpooling home so that I don’t have to see you again today. I will be hanging at Ruby Beach, bay-bee!”
“What? Carpooling? With who?” I was panicking by this point. This morning was such a blur of nerves; I barely remembered half of what my mother had told me. Was I really carpooling? If so, with who?
“Jean, wha—“
“Here you are!” she sang in a sickly sweet voice through her smirk. “Have a nice day!”
Before I knew it, I was out of the car, standing in the high school parking lot. Alone and still completely confused, the distraction of fighting with Jean gone, my nerves returned even worse than before. However, there was only one thing that I could do from here. And that thing was to collect myself and then walk into the building that I thought I would never go in again.
