I Refuse to Sink
chapter 1
“Riley, get up now!” My mom shook me out of my sleep. “Your breakfast is on the table downstairs and your stylist laid out your outfit for you”
I cringed at the word stylist. The last thing I wanted to do was move in with my high-end mother until I went off to college. But, my parents didn’t give me a choice. I guess when I told my dad I never wanted to step foot in Southern High School again he took it literally and sent me all the way across the country to live with my mom.
“It will be good for you, a new start” I remember him saying as I stepped on the plane.
I rolled over and looked at the picture of Miles and I. God I missed him. Ever since 5 months ago my life had took a total change of direction. I can still remember sitting on his front steps holding hands and laughing together for hours on end. But, now everything was different. He was gone. I had known Miles my whole life. It started with being best friends then slowly moved into a relationship. I loved him so much. I always have and always will. And the second I found out he had cancer my whole life had crashed in on me. I knew he was strong but the doctors told him it was too late and there wasn’t much they could do. I remember the day they told him how much longer he had as if it was happening right now;
“How much longer do I have?” He had asked the doctor as him and I sat hand in hand at the hospital.
“2 weeks, maybe 3 if you’re lucky” I had cringed at the thought of losing him so soon. I mean he was the guy I wanted to marry and have kids with. We both broke down into tears. I had never seen him cry but when I did it made me want to cry more.
We spent every second of the last couple weeks of his life together. There wasn’t a second we weren’t in a 5 foot radius of each other. I sat next to his bed at the hospital and spent most of the nights there in the uncomfortable quest chair. He told me multiple times to go home and get a good rest. But something inside of me wouldn’t let me go. But once after 2 weeks I finally went home. I sat in the chair as the doctors suddenly came rushing in to tell me to leave. But, I couldn’t I sat there waiting, hoping that maybe he would be okay. Eventually I found out he wasn’t. I went to the funeral and avoid people I knew in public but I wouldn’t go to school. And that is how I ended up living with my mom. Most kids would be physicked to move from boring old Connecticut to California but I on the other hand was dreading the minutes leading up to it.
“Riley!” my mom called again. I finally got up and looked at the outfit my ‘stylist’ had laid out for me. I had to admit it was really cute. But, not like I couldn’t put something like that together. I went into my bathroom to straighten my long dark brown hair but instead I found a 2 people waiting for me around a spinning chair.
“Hi?” I said not realizing how rude I sounded it.
“Hello, I am Sydney and this is my assistant Leah, we will be doing your hair and make-up this morning.” I sighed and sat down. I felt like a Kardashian. And feeling like that was at the bottom of my list of wants. Even though I didn’t mind doing my hair and make-up when they finished I looked stunning.
“Wow” I gasped. “It looks, it looks amazing!” I almost screamed. They both smiled and nodded then quickly packed up their stuff and left. I turned and looked in the mirror. Then I put on my outfit. Being 5’1” at the age of 17 it was hard to find stuff that flattered my body but this outfit was PERFECT.
I grabbed my book bag and went downstairs to see my mom and grab breakfast.
“No, no, no. That’s not right something must have gone wrong-no that’s wrong-I don’t care fix it” I heard my mom screaming at an employee about something that she probably screwed up. I rolled my eyes and went outside to wait for the bus. But, instead a green Range Rover pulled up. Out walked a tall, shaggy blonde haired, deep brown eyed guy. He walked around to the passenger door and opened it for me.
“There you are beautiful.” He said then winked. I let out a shy smile then climbed in. He closed the door and walked around to the other side and began to drive.
