A Price to Pay
Part 2 Chapter 43
As usual Jeremy was waiting for me at my locker at the end of the day. I tried my best to stay calm but I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and it didn’t help that Rachel was in my last class. “Hey how are you holding up?” Jeremy asked while kissing me lightly on my cheek. I shoved my books in my locker, and grabbed my gym bag, “What does it look like?” I retorted. Jeremy brushed away a hair that had gotten loose from my pony tail, “Amy, calm down. You’re an amazing soccer player, just because you know that University of Miami is going to be here doesn’t mean a thing.” I looked at him, “This is my dream college, what if I screw it up?” Jeremy smiled, “If you screw it up I’ll personally go on the field and give you a pep-talk.” I smiled, “Thanks.” Jeremy nodded his head and handed me my uniform, and waited outside of the bathroom. When I came out Jeremy asked, “So why don’t you ever change in the locker room?” I rolled my eyes like the answer was obvious, “If I change in the bathroom, I get to see you more.” Jeremy smiled, “That’s sweet.” I nodded my head, “I know.” Jeremy put his arm around me and whispered in my ear, “Open up my book bag.” I shoved him, “You have hands don’t you?” He turned to me and gave me puppy dog eyes, “Please open my book bag.” I rolled my eyes, “Fine.” I grabbed his book bag and opened the zipper, inside was a gift wrapped in soccer ball wrapping paper. I looked up at Jeremy, “You didn’t have to get me a gift.” I whispered. Jeremy rolled his eyes, “You haven’t even opened it yet.” I looked down and pulled back the wrapping paper. Inside were two white shin guards, one had the word FOREVER and the other had the word LOVED written in sharpie. The shin guards matched my cleats, which still said, LOVE FOREVER. I looked up at Jeremy, “You didn’t have to do that, thank you.” I said while pulling him into a giant hug. “You have love forever written on your cleat, and I thought, you know, since what happened, you should know that you’re forever loved.” I gave him a big kiss, “I love it, but I love you even more, thank you.” Jeremy smiled, “I thought so.” He said smugly while picking me up. “Jeremy,” I giggled, “what are you doing?” He smiled, “I’m carrying you out to the field, it will be one heck of an entrance.” I giggled even more and kissed him on the cheek, “I love you.”
As the ref blew his whistle, signally that it was the end of the game, the team piled on top of Faith and I. We had won the game 4-0 to one of the hardest teams in the Varsity A league. I had shot all four goals and Faith had saved everything. The game was amazing. After everyone congratulated us we walked over to Jeremy. Jeremy didn’t say anything; he just gave me a long slow kiss on the lips. We both didn’t want to pull away, but Faith cleared her throat and said, “Back to planet Earth you two.” Reluctantly we both pulled away. “So do you guys want to go get something to eat?” Jeremy and Faith both nodded their heads, but coach Burns yelled across the field to us, “Faith, Amy Come over here!” I gave Jeremy a quick kiss on the cheek and said, “Be right back.” Faith and I ran across the field to where coach was. Next to him was a lean man in his mid 40’s. Coach looked at us and said, “This is the scout from University of Miami, he saw you girls play and he wanted to speak to you both.” My heart started pounding hard. I tried to keep as calm as possible. The said cleared his throat and said, “I am Mr. Hines, from the University of Miami. I saw both of you play, and I just wanted to tell you that you both are amazing. Now I know we still need to look at your records and grades, but I’m telling you there is almost a 99% chance that you will get into our college.” Faith I looked at each other with the biggest smiles on our faces, “Thank you so much!” we said together, “No thank you, now if I can talk to your parents about our school, and give them some information about it…” A bad case of Déjà vu washed over me. This has happened before, when I was accepted to St. Sebastian’s. My parents weren’t there, and my parents still aren’t here. I looked down unsure what to do. Faith looked at me and then said, “She’s staying with my aunt, uncle, and me.” Then she pointed over to them. Mr. Hines told us thank you then walked toward Aunt Liz and Uncle Ryan. Faith looked at me, “Are you ok?” I nodded my head, “Yeah, tell Jeremy I’m sorry, I’m going to go run, I’ll meet you home.” Faith looked like she was going to say something but she didn’t. I turned and ran out the gate, so yeah, I guess you could say I was running away from my problems.
