Chapter 1 Part 2
Stephanie's POV
I fell back on my freshly made bed and stared at the ceiling of my new room. We had been living there for about 36 hours. It was a little weird to feel so free. I didn’t feel like I had to be scared. Just then there was a loud knock on the door. Suddenly, all the feeling of safety flowed out of me. What if my dad had found us? I was home alone because my mom had gone out to search for a job.
I nervously got up and walked out the door of my room and into the hallway. My legs felt weak and I could feel my heart speeding up. I slowly opened the door and peered out. I let out a huge sigh relief when I saw a boy and a girl, who looked about my age, standing on our small porch.
I opened the door all the way and got a better look at the two teenagers. I quickly looked at the girl and then turned back to the boy. He was tall, with hazel eyes and dark brown hair. He was wearing a blue and red, plaid button up shirt, that he had un-buttoned with a Maroon 5 t-shirt. My favorite band. He had jeans on and he was wearing red, black and white Jordan's. He was really cute and his smile was warm and inviting.
“Hello,” The girl said, with a lot of energy. “I’m Savannah and this is my twin brother Josh. We live down the street and we just wanted to welcome you to town.”
The cute boy, Josh, waved. I smiled and wished that I had something nicer on than sweat pants and a white pull-over sweatshirt. “Hi,” I said. “I’m Stephanie. I moved here from San Francisco, California.”
“Nice to meet you Stephanie,” Josh said. Wow, he’s a gentleman. “We brought you these brownies,” he said handing me a plate with tinfoil covering it.
I took the plate. “Oh thank you. Do you want to come in?” I asked.
“Sure,” Savannah said walking in. Her brother followed her.
I led them into the kitchen and put the brownies on the counter. Then, we went into the living room and the two of them sat on the couch and I sat on the chair next to it. We sat and chatted for a while. Josh didn’t say much, but I could tell he was looking at me the whole time. Then the question that I, stupidly, hadn’t thought people would ask, came up.
“Why did you move?” Savannah asked.
A lump formed in my throat. “Oh um,” I tried to quickly think of an excuse. “My mom got laid-off and so we moved.”
“To Maxeys, Georgia? Interesting place to look for a job,” Savannah said.
“Savvy!” Josh said, lightly hitting his sister on the shoulder. I flinched. Even though it was a playful punch, it still brought back memories of my father. I don’t think either of them saw my reaction, but I wasn’t sure.
Josh looked at his watch. “Oh we have to go,” he said standing up. “Sorry. Are you going to Keniferds High?”
I recognized the name of the high school that I would be attending after February break. “Yah,” I said. “Do you guys go there?”
“Yah, we’ll see you on Monday?” Savannah asked.
“See you Monday,” I said as they walked out the door. I watched them as they disappeared down the street.
