Deadly Games
~Chapter Ten~
“Oh hello, David! You’re looking rather nice this morning, took some time to get ready today?” Ms. Mary smiled at David as he set his bag behind the counter and punched something into the computer.
He laughed once. “I guess so!” He turned to face us both, smiling. “And how are you, Della?”
His smile was all it took to calm me down. I set my teacup down and smiled at him. “Good, thank you.”
Ms. Mary looked at me quizzically. “Yes. It does seem that you’re better now, doesn’t it?”
I quickly pushed off of the chair and walked over to David. “Oh Ms. Mary, I’ve never been better!” I threw a quick smile in David’s direction.
“Hmm, well, you keep an eye on her, okay David? She wasn’t too well this morning,” Ms. Mary got up carefully to get another cup of tea.
I watched her struggle to lift the teapot with her shaking hands.
“Let me help you with that,” David said as he rushed to hold the pot for her.
“Thank you, deary. My muscles aren’t what they used to be, that’s for sure...” Ms. Mary trailed off as she shuffled into the back room.
David chuckled as Ms. Mary began to sing an old forgotten tune that no one around here had heard of.
“I really do wish she would take it easier,” I said, pushing a lock of hair behind my ear.
“Yeah… how old is she now?” David asked, tidying up the counter a bit.
“Eighty-six, her birthday is in May,” I said, folding my arms on the counter. “She’s pretty lively for her age.”
David laughed. “Just like you!” He playfully pushed my forearm.
As I had been lying on the floor of my bedroom, Trey had gotten up to do who knows what. He had stood above me, watching me lay lifeless.
“Get up,” he had growled at me, receiving no answer. “GET UP.”
I had refused to move, hoping he would leave me there. With an unattractive grunt, he kicked me hard in my forearm.
Tears filled my eyes as David’s fingers pushed into my purple bruise as I tried desperately to hold back a yelp.
David withdrew his hand suddenly, his squinted with curiosity. “You all right?”
I averted my eyes, nodding slightly, hoping he’d drop it.
Without a word, he reached over to my arm and pulled up my sleeve. Purple splotches littered my arm.
I yanked my arm away, pulling my sleeve back down, my face blushing once again.
“Della, are these from him?” David asked as he remembered me talking of Trey yesterday. His voice was sad and pitiful.
I looked away to the window, watching the snow begin to fall once again in large flakes, the sky darkened with big, grey clouds.
I felt his hand grasp onto mine and when I turned to face him, I saw that his eyes had clouded over as well.
“I’m going to get you through this,” David intertwined his fingers in mine.
I looked down at our hands joined as one as tears flooded my eyes.
With a gentle finger, he lead my chin up to face him. “We’re going to get through this.”
