Prologue
"Ema McKenzie?"
"Here," I said. The old man, Mr. Kenna, I think - looked up through his glasses. He scanned the other students before repeating my name.
"Ema? Is she here?" This is going to be a long school year.
"I'm here!" I waved my hand around over my head. He saw and nodded at me before continuing the roll call. I sighed and looked back down at the worksheet we were supposed to be doing. The first problem already had me baffled:
5x(2+7x^3(4))+5(x+7)
I stared at the problem. Maybe the answer would just come to me. I didn't deserve to be in this class. Lucy did. So why was I here? For Lucy, I told myself.
Lucy was the smartest girl I knew. She was also my best friend. So when I found out there was only one spot left in the Advanced Algebra 2 class for this year - our Sophomore year - I had to sign up. I couldn't let Lucy be alone.
Except Lucy didn't get in.
And I did.
I'm still completely baffled at how it could've come that I could make it into this class while Lucy was stuck in Geometry. She was smarer than me. Better than me. Her grades were perfect, mine were luck to be C's. D's now, I thought to my self.
There was another reason I had to be in this class, and that reason was currently two seats down from me to my left.
Caleb Jackson.
Lucy's boyfriend, my crush. The only reason me and Lucy had ever gotten in a fight 3 years ago when they started dating. Because she knew I liked him. That wasn't something friends were supposed to do, was it?
My fuming was interupted by my name being said again. "Ms. McKenzie?" I looked up at Mr. Kenna. "The answer to number one, please?" I casually glanced around at the people around me's paper.
"Uh, 6x." He nodded. Turned around. Grabbed an Expo marker. And held it out to me.
"Now, I need you to Justify your answer."
Yeah, this is gonna be a long year.
