    part 20 // peanut43998
My head was pounding, and all I could think about was what my mom said to me. What could she possibly mean by that? That Ashley was the only one with problems?
The pounding in my head got worse. I felt like curling up in my own bed, not Ashley's, and start crying. And never leave my room again. But I knew I couldn't. Not with this police officer staring at me. I was just sitting there, hands on my lap, and staring at the wall into nothingness. Images flashed before my eyes.
Me stabbing the knife through my sister's innocent back. Me not caring that I just killed my own blood. I remembered the feeling of her limp body in my hands before throwing her in the hole that I'd dug.
"Or what, you'll murder me?" Just kept playing in my head. She said it so sarcastically. At the time, I'd only been annoyed by what she said. But now, I'm beginning to be haunted by the sentence.
I stared down at the orange suit I'd been put in. Never in all of my years of living have I ever thought I'd be wearing one of these ugly things. I looked around at my jail cell. It seemed like it was just like the ones in the movies. I was by myself in the cold and smelly little room. There was one bed attached to the steel wall, not even touching the ground. Just like a metal thing hanging out of the wall. It had a somewhat comfortable looking matress with a thin pillow. There was a sink and a little stall with a flushable toilet. Sure, I'd seen them in the movies. But movies always exaggerated things like that. I wasn't expecting a royal room or anything, but I also wasn't expecting this.
I sat down on the bed. Why did I do that? Why did I kill my own sister? I thought back to what she'd done to me.
She really hadn't done anything to me. I'd just stabbed her to live her life. And turns out, it wasn't even that great. It was actually like a living hell.
"I'd do anything to take it all back." I whispered. I leaned over so that I was laying on the bed. I watched what was happening on the other side of the bars. Nothing, really. There was one person across from me doing the same thing I was. Laying there, probably thinking about what they'd done. I closed my eyes and thought.
'I'm a monster' was the first thing that went through my mind. It wasn't a lie, really. It was the truth.
The second thing that entered it was 'I miss you.' I wasn't sure who it could have been directed to.
I came to one conclusion after thinking about it long and hard.
    It was Ashley.
"Cassandra, you have a visitor." The police officer rudely woke me up. But I was thankful, because I was having a terrible nightmare. I woke up with my hair sticking to my face with sweat.
"Who is it?" I asked, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. I felt like closing them again. They did close at one point.
"Hey, Cass." I stared back at Danny, with my eyes wide open.

    Roommates
    Chapter 14
    Carson's POV
"So, your name is Carson?" Drake grinned at me.
We just woke up an hour ago, and we decided to walk to class together.
    "Who told you?" I snapped.
"Oh, so it is." he chuckled.
"It's not funny." I said, crossing my arms.
"Sorry, it's just at first when Brett said your name, I was thinking of a guy." he smiled.
I blocked Drake out of my mind for a minute, and thought of Brett.
I sneaked in our dorm this morning to get a spare change of clothes, just in case I had to stay over again. I was walking out of my room when Brett appeared by his doorway, looking worried.
I didn't know what to do, so I just ran. I couldn't face him then, and I can't now.
"Hello? Carson?" Drake asked, waving his hands in my face.
    "W-what?" I asked.
    "Quit daydreaming." he joked.
    "I was not!" I protested.
"Sure, we'll go with that." he winked.
He left me at my first class, accounting, and I sat in my usual seat.
Professor Grimes suddenly spoke up, and began his lesson for today.
I quickly jotted down notes as he was speaking.
After class, my hand was sore from writing so much.
I continued my day, moping around, jotting notes, taking homework assignments, and listening to professors talk.
After classes were over, I started to run back to my dorm to get some more stuff before anyone else comes back.
I got inside, and there wasn't any noise except for me walking.
I quickly took out some of my money, some more books, and more clothes. I was so lucky that Drake was letting me stay as long as I wanted.
    Suddenly, my door slammed shut.
I quickly turned my head around, and did a double take.
Brett was blocking my only exit.
I got my bag with all of my stuff, and got up slowly, knowing he was watching my every move.
"Excuse me." I said, trying not to snap at him.
"Carson, you need to come back here." he said, with his usual icy blue eyes turning dark.
I bit my lip. "Why? There's no one here I can trust."
He seemed hurt by that, and I wished I had taken back my words.
"I have to go, Drake's waiting." I said, after a minute of me looking in his eyes.
"Wait, let me explain." he said.
I tried to fight back my tears from falling out. Why was I crying over Brett?
"There's nothing to explain." I said, with my voice cracking in the end.
    "Carson, I didn't mean to-"
He was cut off by the sound of my phone vibrating in my pocket. I took it out, and I read the name of the person calling me. Nate.
Why hadn't I deleted his contact yet? I looked up at Brett, who was as shocked as I was.
"Answer it." Brett said after the forth ring.
I hesitated, and clicked the green 'answer' button.
My hand was shaking as I held it up against my ear. "Hello?"
"Carson! I'm so glad you picked up! We need to talk." Nate said, sounding happier than ever.
Was he drunk that day I confronted him? Did he not remember anything.
    "I don't think that's a good idea." I said in a low voice.
"Come on, baby. I'm taking a flight here tomorrow, and the first thing I want to do is talk to you." Nate begged.
I rolled my eyes. "I'm not your 'baby'."
"So, is that a yes?" he asked.
I looked up at Brett who seemed irritated.
"Whatever. Fine." I said, and hung up on him.
"Carson, you don't have to go if you-"
I cut Brett of with, "I have to go do work and study. Bye."
I pushed passed him, and stormed off back to Drake's dorm.

"Ash!" I heard someone call after me. I was half way to Ashley's car at the end of the school day when I turned around. Emma Keifer was running after me. Ashley's second best friend.
"Hey." I said and smiled. I felt my throat tighten up at the sound of hearing "Ash" being referred to me. I'd have to get used to that.
"Do you want to hang out tomorrow after school?" She asked with a smile on her face. She was acting kind of weird. The smile almost looked fake.
"Yeah, of course!" I smiled back as real as I could.
"Cool. We can go out and get some of your favorite Iced Cappuccino." She said and put her hand on her shorts awkwardly.
"Yeah, of course." I said less enthusiastically. What flavored Cappuccino was that again?
"Alright, see you tomorrow!" She blew a kiss and skipped away.
I got into Ashley's car and started driving. I couldn't help but wonder how this meeting would go. What if I said something wrong? What if she asked me about how if I knew 'Cassandra' was doing and I said something dumb like "I'm fine."? That would totally blow my cover. I'd be behind bars in no time.
I shut my eyes as long as the stoplight would allow me. This wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.
Could it get any more complicated?
I walked quietly into Ashley's room. My mom was sleeping. She was probably tired from being worried about 'Cassandra'.
She probably wasn't worried about me. She was probably relieved to have me gone. If it were up to her, she'd probably be partying about losing me. She did buy a cake, after all.
I plopped down on my dead sister's bed and looked around the room. Everything was cleaned up and back in order. My mom re-organized the room neatly.
My eye caught something in the mirror. It was under the bed. I stood up and looked under the huge bed. It was a diary.
"My diary" was scribbled on the cover in what looked like Ashley's 7th grade handwriting. I couldn't help myself from looking in it. Maybe it had information about that day I was pushed in the lake.
I opened the diary, hands shaking. Was I nervous to find out who was following me? Or would I be relieved in the end? It probably wouldn't even have any information about the time in 7th grade. But I still let my eyes scan over the little words on the page.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so excited." Typical diary entry for Ashley. "I'm going to New York with a couple of my friends! I like, can't wait. I'm asking Cassandra to go just so I can trick her into thinking I love her." I swallowed back the tears, but continued reading. "Devilish plan, huh? No one likes her, so why not humiliate her? I don't like her either. I don't even love her. What could go wrong? She'll kill me?" One tear fell from my cheek and soaked into the old piece of notebook paper. But still, I continued. "Just kidding. She would never kill me. I swear, I'm like her idol. She wouldn't hurt a fly, let alone her own blood. Emma, Annie, Isabelle, and Emma are so excited to go. They know about my plan. And they're in on it. They're going to pretend that they like her, but they really don't. I'm practically laughing my head off writing this. This plan is going to be great."
I remembered that night at the lake in New York. We were sitting by the lake when I was talking to Emma.
    ----
"Look at the way Ashley walks." I said, watching my sister waddle away. This was before I was pushed in. Ashley walked off to go get another Iced Cappuccino. "She waddles like a duck." I turned my head to look at Emma throw her head back and laugh.
"She does waddle like a duck, now that I think of it." She said and laughed even more. "Nice one, Cass. I might even grow to like you." She held her hand out for me to high-five, and I did exactly what she meant by it. She laughed as if it was the funniest thing in the world when she saw Ashley coming back.
    ----
My mind connected the two memories.
Emma's laugh was the same laugh I'd heard in the bathroom today.
