the crucible was written during the red scares, and miller based the hysteria and the readiness to blame others in the crucible on the McCarthyism. people were so frantic because they thought that the only way to save themselves was to blame others. peple's lives were ruined by the accusations. in salem they were hung and seen as evil, and in the McCarthy era people accused of Communism were pretty much shunned. they couldn't get jobs or anything even after the scare ended and mccarthy died. hope i helped :) 0reply
