ik exactly what ur tlking about, cuz this happened with me and my ex, what he did was in a way pushing u away becuz as most guys are, they are afraid of their feelings but the thing is, he came back to you...which means he reallly likes you and is willing to turn down a girl and numerous other girls for you and that says something, my advice is take it slow and dont move too fast and if he is okay with that...it means he actually cares about you and didnt just go back to you because he couldnt get anybody else.
