Chapter
2
Arianna
I glanced at the mirror one more time. I couldn’t get my
hair to cooperate. I never could. I wasn’t lucky like
Hannah. With her curly blonde hair and her unusual purple eyes,
all the guys loved her. But those poor boys still haven’t
learned. Hannah was too good for all of them. She always politely
turned them down. She didn’t like relationships. That was
one of the things I loved about her.
Hannah always insisted I was so much prettier than her. She said
she’d kill for straight hair like mine. With my jet-black
hair and boring gray eyes, I didn’t see how this was true.
I guess no one is truly pleased with his or her looks.
So there I was trying to fix my hair when I glanced out of my
mirror, There was Hannah, standing there talking to some insanely
hot boy in front of my house. My jaw dropped. Hannah didn’t
do well with guys. Like I said, they loved her. She just could
never trust them. They liked her for her looks. Hannah was smart
and usually made good decisions. But this was different. She
never acted like this in front of a guy. So I stood in the
window, spying on them.
Kid with the hoodie handed her a pen. And then she took it and
wrote her number on his hand. I was shocked. She would never
do that to a guy. This was bad.
I ran down the steps and stood by the front door. Hannah made her
way up my path in a daze. She reaches up to ring then bell, and
then sees me. Her face breaks into a gigantic smile. I opened the
door and let her into my house. “Hey!” she said.
“You forgot me again,” she said. But she wasn’t
angry. She was too happy.
I didn’t say anything. I led her to the kitchen. I grabbed
cheese and crackers from the fridge and put them out on to the
table. I know she’d say more with a full stomach. She
gratefully grabbed a cracker.
“So who was that kid?” I asked.
Hannah blushed. “Logan,” she said. Then she told me
the whole story. How he almost killed her and then offered to
give her a ride home. Then she gave him her number.
“Isn’t that kind of dangerous?” I asked.
Hannah shrugged. “I’m a big girl Arianna. I can take
care of myself.” She crossed her hands over her chest. Once
Hannah made up her mind, it was futile to try to change it.
I sighed and threw up my hands before this became an argument.
“So are you going to Jacob’s party tonight?” I
asked. Every year Jacob Devers has this ultimate birthday party.
Last year it was at his cousin’s house while they were away
in Florida. After a while it got too wild for Hannah and me.
About twenty minutes after we left, the cops went to go break it
up.
Hannah thought for a moment. “Yeah I’m going. Are
you?”
I sighed. “Yeah,” I said. “Yeah I
am.”
Hannah stared at me strangely. “Well okay,” she said.
She picked up a cracker and shoved it into her mouth.
“Let’s go pick out what we are wearing.”
She jumped off the stool and ran upstairs to my room. I sighed and dutifully followed her. This was going to be a long night.
