Shane’s phone was
blowing up from all the texts he was getting that Savannah was
hooking up with another guy. He tried calling Savannah but she
wouldn’t answer. He tried Ava next but to no avail. How could
she do this to him? After the way she’d been acting all day
and even last night. Shane knew Savannah wasn’t that
drunk when she hooked up with him.
Was this still part of her
game with Ava? To find out if Shane was for real or not? He’d
already proved to Savannah that he was being honest when he said he
liked her, so why was she still playing this game? If Shane wanted
to, he could be hooking up with other girls right at this moment,
but he chose not to because of Savannah. So why wasn’t she
doing that for him?
He was so angry that it
was his dad’s weekend. If it was his mom’s, he’d
be at that party right now and Savannah wouldn’t be doing
that. But of course Heather had to rat him out to his dad, and now
Shane is basically on house arrest, which his father tried to call
‘family time.’ More like his father at work, Corinne at
a friend’s house, Heather in the living room watching TV and
eating not only for herself but the baby she was pregnant with, and
Shane in his room.
But something was
different this time. Everyone was home and Shane couldn’t
figure out why. For a kid in all honor’s classes, it bothered
him that he was so confused about everything right now and
couldn’t figure anything out. He felt stupid.
“Shane,” Mr.
Palmer knocked on his door.
“What?” Shane
asked, not looking up from his phone screen. He was trying to check
Twitter to see if anyone had posted anything. He thought he found
what he was looking for when his father snatched the phone from his
hand.
“You need to come
downstairs,” he said. “Now.”
“Why? I
haven’t done anything wrong,” Shane said, hoping
Corinne didn’t tell him that Savannah had slept over last
night.
“I know you
haven’t. We have some news for you,” he said.
“Oh.
Perfect.”
“Knock off the
attitude,” he said, walking back downstairs with
Shane’s phone.
“Dad, I need
that,” Shane said.
“You’ll get it
back after Heather and I talk to you. Now we’ve already broke
the news to Corinne and she took it very well. We’re hoping
you will too,” he said nervously, knowing Shane probably
wouldn’t.
Shane braced himself for
what he was about to hear. He already endured finding out Heather
was pregnant and that his father was marrying her once the baby was
born. The way his father proposed it, he knew it would be bad. He
was just hoping it wasn’t worse than his first two
announcements.
Shane sat down on the
leather couch opposite of Heather and his dad. Heather’s long
blonde hair, makeup clouded blue eyes, thin pierced nose by a small
diamond stud, perfectly shaped eyebrows, and acrylic nails made her
seem like she came straight off of Jersey Shore. Now that her body
wasn’t hot enough to work at Hooter’s anymore because
of her pregnant belly, she was being supported by Mr. Palmer. Shane
just thought she was a gold digging leech.
“Shane,”
Heather smiled, trying to prepare herself for the blowup Shane was
about to have. She had a way of speaking that made everything sound
like she was asking a question. “So as you know, I’m
six months along now and we’ve been preparing the
baby’s room for his or her arrival and we’re all super
excited.”
“Okay,” Shane
said, not understanding why they were talking to him.
“Well, as it turns
out, it’s not just one baby…two months ago, we found
out we’re having twins,” she tried to
smile.
