she turned to me and answered,
"because humans hurt.
they hurt each other and they hurt themselves."

and she said it in the soft, hopeless kind of way that made me feel like my spine was collapsing in on itself. what i wanted to tell her but never did is that yes, humans hurt, but humans also heal. humans write songs and stories and poems, they make art, they can create as much as they can destroy. they fall in love, too, just as often as they fall out of it. i think there's hope in that. i hope she finds that hope one day.
