*Sequel to Getting the
Guy*
∞ Prologue ∞
I took steps forward closer and closer
to the school, hand in hand with Dalton. I suddenly felt
butterflies released through my stomach, and I felt like turning
back around and running home, but I restrained myself from
looking anything but calm and collected. We weren't even in
school yet and we were already getting looks. As long as were
both happy, I thought to myself. I turned my head to Dalton
to see if he looked as nervous as I was, but he had on a glowing
smile, greeting anyone who looked at us. I know I shouldn't
care what other people think, but it's hard not to in high
school. It was about 7:20 and we had 10 minutes to hang out
outside before we went in to the building to start the day. I
spotted my group of 'friends' before they spotted me, and
I tried to tug Dalton around them so we would be out of sight
from them, but I was too late. Molly, the "leader"
spotted us and stopped talking for a second to squint. Dalton
must have noticed what I saw too, because he said "Chill
out" with a laugh. I took a deep breath when Molly and her
group of friends followed behind as they walked towards us. I
squeezed his hand and acted like nothing was wrong. Molly looked
the same as she did before summer started, with her straight
brown hair just below her shoulders and electric blue eyes. Her
hair was naturally wavy, but shes burnt it more then enough by
straightening it. We stared for a second at each other before I
said the first words. "Hi.." I gave a sweet, but fake
smile. I'm sure she could sense I was trying to separate from
the group by not making an effort to talk to her this whole
summer. "Hmm...hi Paisley." she said, examining my
clothes, hair, makeup, and shoes. She's extremely judgmental.
If I were to describe her in a few words, they would be heavy
makeup, straight hair, short skirts/shorts, shirts that could fit
a 6 year old, and over expensive shoes. She used to say she has a
"reputation" to maintain. "Whose this." she
pretty much demanded. "This is Dalton." He gave a quick
smile. "Dalton who? Is he new." I was afraid her
rudeness would hurt him, but he just stared straight back at her.
Before I could answer, he replied for himself. "Dalton
Hayes. And, no, I'm not new." he said, the least bit
afraid of them, like he was last year. "Oh, hah, you're
the frea- I mean, you're the quiet kid." She laughed
with her friends behind her. She had done that on purpose, she
knew who he was, and she was trying to offend him. "Not
anymore!" he said with an edge of imitation in his voice,
and I fought back a laugh. Molly was shut down immediately, and
clearly had no comeback to that, so she pretended to get a text
message, and pulled out her phone. The bell rang and we pushed
right through them to the doors. They seemed startled at mine and
his confidence. I knew I left them standing there, astounded at
who I became over the summer, and who Dalton had become to. I
didn't bother to look back, but I thought I heard Molly let
out a gasp before I took steps into the school to start another
year.
