CHAPTER
ONE
It was
evident that it was summer, the sun blazing down on my scalp,
face and legs. June twenty-second. Finally here. I get to see
Chase again. Whenever I talk with my friends about him, they
always tell me that we were just a summer fling, that after
summer, he goes back to Minnesota and dates another girl. But
surely that isn’t true.
I walked, making
my way to the oh-so-familiar Karr family condo. I hovered my hand
over the doorbell, hesitant. I figured the doorbell would be a
little too obnoxious. Maybe I should text him and tell him
I’m here instead? Then he’d think I was being too
shy. C’mon, Rayleigh. You can do this. On the count of
three. One, two, two and a half...Three!
I gave two big
knocks on the front door, and almost immediately, Chase opened
it. “Ray!” he said. I then recognized his shaggy,
dark brown hair and deep caramel eyes, and the woodsy smell of
his cologne. He gave me a big hug, and led me
inside.
The nervousness
soon faded away from me. I plopped down on the couch, and Chase
followed, putting his arm around me, and with the other hand,
grabbing the remote and flicking on the TV.
“I really
missed you,” I said, resting my head on his
chest.
“I missed
you too, Ray,” Chase said. I looked up at him, and kissed
him. I could feel his lips curling up into a smile.
“Aww!” I heard someone sarcastically say. I looked,
and realized who it was. Chase’s brother, Damon.
“Ugh. Hey
Damon,” I said.
“Glad to
see ya, Ray.” I shuddered when he called me
that. “Welp, I’m heading out. See
you Chase,” he said. “Oh, and see you, too.” He
winked at me. I rolled my eyes.
“I’m
sure your used to that by now.” Chase laughed uneasily.
He watched the
TV, the weather on. The forecast showed thunderstorms heading our
way. “Eh, nothing to worry about,” he
shrugged.
