I sat in the lobby of my local
hospital. My elbows were rested on my knees, and I
interlocked my fingers and rested my head on them. My mom
went to the bathroom. She said she had to go pee, but her
voice started to quiver when she was talking. “Mommy,
what’s wrong with that girl.” A little girl next to me
whispered to her mother. I looked up at her. She was about
four or five. Her hair was completely shaved off and she had
a breathing tube in her nose. I smiled. Trying not to look
nervous. But her bright green eyes just stared at me. Her
mother looked up from her magazine. She grabbed the little
girl and sat her on her lap. My smile faded and I looked back
down at the floor. “Hi sweetie.” My mom sighed as she sat
in the seat next to me. I looked at her. Her face was wet and
her eyes were red and puffy. She’d been crying. I tried to
avoid eye contact. My eyes started to sting and I got a lump
in the back of my throat. “Mom, I’m gonna r-.” A squeak
of a door cut me off. My eyes shot up. A doctor and a nurse,
who helped me take my test, walked toward us. I got up and
stuck out my hand to greet the doctor. I noticed my hand was
shaking and I stuck it in my coat pocket. “Hello Nia.”
The doctor said. “I’m doctor Gadge.” His eyes showed
sorrow. My heart stopped and waited for the bad news. I sat
back down in my seat. The soft cushioning sunk, just as the
same time as my stomach. “Nia.” Doctor Gadge went on.
“I’m sorry, but I may have bad news.” My mom grabbed my
hand. “Mrs. Dulce, I’m afraid Nai has,” He paused. My
eyes shot towards him. “Has, Melanoma skin cancer.” The
earth stopped. Stopped breathing, stopped spinning, stopped
living. I could feel every bone in my body turn into jelly.
My mom dropped my hand and ran to the bathroom. I found my
spot on the floor again. And took a deep breath. Doctor Gadge
touched my should. “I’m so sorry.” He whispered. Then
left, with the nurse trailing behind him. I looked up, and
saw the little girls green eyes locked onto mine. Her hand
stuck out in front of her. “Hello, my name is
Hope.”
