Chapter 33

We all sat in silence around Jake, drowning in our own thoughts when i felt something move
Jake's hand. His fingers moved slightly but that was enough to give me hope. I looked up into his face, praying that he would get up and indeed, his eyes wrestled themselves opened. His eyes landed on me first and his lips curled up into a smile.
"Tabitha."
"I'm right here," i said, tears around the rims of my eyes.
"What happened?" he asked.
"There was a car accident. You got it pretty bad." His voice was croaky and kind of slow as if he was weak.
"Oh, yea. I'm sorry i didn't get you home. Is your mom okay?"
"She was mad but i survived." Ever since my mom and Miss Salter came back in, they were both quiet, not saying a word until now.
"Jake?" Miss Salter said, sitting up. Jake slowly moved his head to her.
"Hey, mom."
"Baby, i was so worried about you."
"Sorry," was all he said. Then he noticed Chris.
"Hey, man. What are you doing?"
"Your girlfriend picked up when i called and explained. This is bad man, why would you do this?" Jake chuckled.
"You talk as if i did it on purpose."
"You wouldn't dream of it."
"You know me too well." Jake looked around and saw my mom.
"You must be Miss Price," he said, addressing my mother who simply nodded. "Well, this is a unique way to meet your girlfriend's mom, huh?" he chuckled and i giggled with him.
"Only you could be half dead and make jokes," i said to him. Just then, the doctor came in.
"Oh, you're awake. That's great," she said smiling at us. She looked down at her clipboard. "Well, you've suffered quite a bit. What you need to do it rest and then-" She stopped as she looked up us the machines around him.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"His heartbeat is slowing down. That's not normal. That means..."
"My baby is not leaving me," Miss Salter said to Dr. Clayton.
"I'm sorry," was all the doctor said. We all looked at Jake, fresh tears in our eyes.
"Jake, baby, you can't leave me. I need you." Miss Salter looked devestated.
"Hey, mom. Is it true. That you only drink to stop worrying about me at night?" Miss Salter quietly nodded at him. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I never realized it until now. If i had know, i never would have done all the things i do."
"That's okay. Right now, just try not to leave me."
"I'm trying." Then he looked at my mom. "Miss Price. I know i may not have been the best influence on your daughter and i made her do quite a few things that she shouldn't be proud of. But all i did was out of love. And I'm sorry if i upset you with any of my actions." I was as surprised as my mother at his formalness.
"I don't care about that right now. I just want you to live." Jake smiled at her and moved on to Chris.
"It was nice knowing ya, man. Do me a favour. Take care of her for me please," Jake said, gesturing to me.
"Will do," Chris replied. Then finally, Jake looked at me.
"Come here," he said, motioning my face closer.
"What is it?"
"I love you." It was the first time he said it. I had never dreamed that it would be said on his death bed. But just those three words filled me with a sense of security. 
"I love you too," i said to him. I saw his eyes smile at me then they started to droop. "No, please, don't leave me. Jake. Jake!" I sobbed hysterically as his eyes closed for the last time.
