No idea.
I woke up to my step
mom's shout. As always. It didn't
scare me like it used to, not anymore. It
was just getting
tiring.
„Good morning
to you too“ I mumbled, as I got out
of bed. I turned my head to look at
Jamie. He was still asleep in his crib. I
figured I wouldn't wake him up yet.
He deserves to get more sleep. I quickly
put my hair up in a bun, and headed
downstairs. My step mom was sitting on
the couch. „Do you know what time
it is?“ she asked
me.
I knew I wasn't
supposed to answer that, or I'd get
something thrown at me. So I just stood
there. She didn't bother to notify me
about the time. She just shook her head,
and asked me another
question.
„Where is
it?“
Now this was just
confusing.
„Where is
what?“
She frowned, as if it
was perfectly clear what 'it' was
and it made her angry I couldn't see
it and answer her immediately. She
didn't answer my question. She just
kept staring at me, still frowning. Right
about then I got what she was asking
about.
„Are you
referring to Jamie?“ I asked. I
tried to stay calm, but my voice gave me
away.
She
nodded.
„Jamie
isn't an it! He's your
son!“ I almost
shouted.
I couldn't
believe her. A second later, a glass came
flying across the room. I developed a
sort of reflex to this already, so I
managed to avoid it. Then came the
insults.
"You worthless
piece of sh*t! How dare
you correct
me?..."
They went on, but I
wasn't listening anymore. I went up
the stairs, guessing Jamie would be awake
by now. And he was. He stretched out his
arms, and I lifted him into mine. He
squeezed himself into me, as he always
does when he's
scared.
"It's okay
Jamie, I promise. We'll get out of
here soon. I'll protect you." I
whispered to
him.
I looked at the
clock, it was now 7:30 am. This was
gonna be a long
day.
