Bubbly
Prologue
"Dakota," my doctor smiled at
me, "you're cancer's GONE. The bone marrow
transplant was a complete success!" I looked
up at my mother, beaming.
"Did you hear that, Mom?! I'm okay!
I beat it!"
"And I couldn't be more proud of you,
Dakota!" She kissed the top of my head;
crying.
"When can I leave, Doc?" I grinned.
"I think by Tuesday. WE still have to run a
few more tests, monitor your recovery, you know the
drill, right?" He chuckled.
"You bet I do!" I laughed with him.
I couldn't believe it! By Tuesday, I'd be
free again! I could go outside, and talk to my
friends, and just LIVE again, without this huge burden on
my shoulders at all time! I could GO places, and DO
things, and just BE myself! That's a luxury
kids with cancer seem to miss out on. But it
doesn't matter! Because every second that I
have now I will use to make this the best life EVER
lived! EVER!
By Tuesday, I was fully packed and ready to leave the
hospital for the first time in MONTHS. I was
wearing my favorite jeans that seemed really baggy and a
t-shirt that seemed to be two sizes too small now that I
had lost a lot of weight from chemotherapy. But Mom
said I could get new clothes if I didn't gain back my
weight after a month. So it was no big deal,
really. I couldn't stop smiling! I was
going home.
When we pulled into our driveway, I saw a big yellow
banner that said, "We missed you, Dakota!"
And inside I found all of my family and friends who
I missed the most when I was in the hospital. I saw
my best friend had cut her hair differently, and I felt
my hand shoot up to the scarf wrapped around my head.
It was yellow, just like the banner outside.
"Dakota, honey, I missed you SO much! Ugh, you
would NOT believe te stuff that happened to me at school
while you were gone! Joey broke up with me!"
She pouted.
"Wait... What?!" I
scream-whispered.
"I SAID, Joey broke up with meee!" She
frowned and jutted out her bottom lip.
"Joey Tribesci?!" I couldn't believe
it.
"YES!"
"You mean MY boyfriend?!" I snapped.
"Oh my gosh... I didn't tell you?!"
She fake-gasped.
"No... You never visited me..." I
felt my bottom lip quiver, and my mom spotted it from a
mile away.
"Abbie, honey, why don't you go home?"
she walked over and patted me on my back.
"Okay Mrs. Myerson. Bye D, welcome home!"
She bounced out.
"Dakota, you'll make better friends than her.
But let's enjoy this wonderful party for you,
okay hon?"
"Sure, Mom," I smiled. I didn't
want anything to ruin my new life.
Little did I know that my new life would be ruined no
matter what I did. It was out of my
hands.
