my 7 yr old sister just asked me that yesterday, she thinks it all goes down to your feet and then your feet become HUGE! haha :)

Fat cells shrink. They do not "burn away" per se, because once you gain fat cells, you can never, ever lose them. It's hard to keep weight off once you've lost it because the fat cells are still there; they're just smaller. On a molecular level, yes some mass of those fat cells is burned for energy, and that's where the mass goes.

When you burn calories, and fat it physically burns away. Most of it disappears and the other is eliminated through waste such as poo :) hahahaha
