“Colton,”
I said and nodded, walking side-by-side with him.
“So,” he said.
“Um, Colton, I haven’t seen you around,
really,” I said.
He smiled a little bit. “I’m new. This is
my first day.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. He turned towards me and
raised an eyebrow suspiciously.
“What’s up?” he asked.
“You’re making a tactical error,” I
said.
“What?”
“You have popular potential. Just back away and
call me a freak or something. Save your rep while you
can.”
“Drew – wha? Drew, I’m not
abandoning you. You’re my friend.”
Yeah, that’s all we’ll ever be,
I thought.
I shook my head. “I don’t … I
don’t deserve friends.” I shouldered by
him and ran to school.
“Drew!” he called. “Drew, wait
up!”
His yells were fading away. Good. I wanted him to do
good. I wanted him to be popular. I wanted this
because … I think I loved him.
---
I got into school and reached into my pocket, pulling
out a crumpled piece of paper. I twisted my locker
combination and opened it. I set my bag on my knee
and started to unload my books.
“Drew,” said Colton.
I closed my eyes, angry, and turned to him, opening
them slowly.
“What, Colton,” I growled.
“Why’d you run away from me?” he
asked through breaths.
“Why’d you run
after me?” I spat and turned back
to my locker.
“Because you’re my frien –
”
“Listen, Colton,” I said. “Just get
lost. You can still visit Nolan if you want to or
whatever else you want, I don’t care. But just
leave me alone, okay? Go find some popular kids to
hang out with.”
