hes trying to say that lifes outcome is always unexpected. and was dear jogn truely a sad ending? Savanah still loves john, and john loves her. But, john payed for tim to get treatment bc he believed that if he was selfless enough to tell john to take savanah after he died then he was worth living. You just have to look at who you want the story to be happy for, but i think everybodys truely happy in the end.

"I finally understood what true loveā„ meant...
Love meant that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be."

i don't think you quite understood the message of dear john. It was about telling people what love really is. In the book Nicholas sparks explained that love is caring about someone so much that you would do anything to make them happy even in the case of John where making Savannah happy would not be to let Tim die because savannah would be sad if Tim died. i hope that helped you understand now.

Well technically the end of dear john suggests that in the end they will end up together. He just doesnt say it in words, he insinuates it.
