the darkest
hour
part
#12
i finally controlled myself, and started my car. i pulled
out of the hospital parking lot, and started driving. i was
going just home. i needed time to think. there was a
basketball game tonight, and i was thinking about going.
i'd have to wear my wig though. ugh i hated that
thing. it itched and didn't stay on when i wanted to move,
but it was good so people didn't stare. i pulled up to my
house. 6 darkshadow drive. i pulled up the driveway
that wrapped around the front, and pulled over to the
garage. i guess my house was big, i mean i typically had
parties there, but i never thought of it like that. i just
thought of it as my house. i parked my golden BMW back in
its usual spot, the furthest corner at the end of the driveway,
because i was the last one to learn how to drive. i grabbed my
iMac, iPod, blackberry, and black coach tote. i typed in the
password for our keypad, and our garage door opened. i
dashed inside, and shut the door, setting the alarm. i was
the only one home, because no one's cars were there. i
strolled out of the mudroom, through the hallway and my vast
kitchen spread out before me. i placed everything on the
island in the middle, in front of a barstool, and washed my
hands. i hung up my red american eagle peacoat, and greeted
my two dogs, louie and lucky. they were twin cockapoos, and
they just turned 5. louie was a dark tan color, and lucky
was lighter. the color was buff, but she amlost looked
white a lot. louie was my buddy. he always followed
me everywhere. lucky tended to follow my mom around.
i sat in the barstool, and put my hands on the dark
granite. i was hungry. i got up, and grabbed lettuce,
tomato, and a fresh cucumber to make a salad. i clicked on
the tv in the corner, hanging, and started chopping. in the
middle, my phone vibrated and i grabbed it. it was
cole. he texted me saying, "home yet?" i texted
him back, "yea, come over. (:" and sat at my the
counter and ate my salad. i opened my iMac, and checked my
emails. my college scholarship applications were sent, and
i was waiting for the result. i'm only a junior, but i
wanted to put myself out there. i did pretty well on all my
SAT's, but i had a pretty solid 4.0 GPA, so i wanted to get as
many offers as possible. i'd applied to florida state, ole
miss, and a few other state schools. not much to do here in
north carolina. and i'm not even near the beaches, so it
gets cold in the winter. i wanted to go south, someplace
tropical. i munched away at my salad, checking
facebook. you know, the usual rounds. said my happy
birthdays to friend's i'd missed. josh put something stupid
on my wall, i giggled a little, then my doorbell rang! i
ran over to the front door to see cole standing there in sweats
and a hoodie.
"cole!" i said, and jumped into his arms.
"hey baby." he said, and hugged me. he led me
inside before he proceded to kiss me. he then pulled away,
but i protested.
"wait." he laughed breathlessly, as did i.
"is anyone home?"
"not at all." i said, and he continued to kiss
me. i pulled away, and noticed something under his eye.
"cole, what happened?" i asked, as i traced the scratch
marks that began under his left eye and continued to the tip of
his nose.
"football, facemask."
"you're not kidding." i said, and kissed it.
"but what happened to your head, now that's the issue."
he said, pulling at the knot in my bandana.
"no, cole, don't." i argued, and tried to replace his
hands with mine.
"how many times have i told you, you look beautiful with or
without hair." he argued.
"no, but i don't want you too."
"now why's that?"
"i don't look pretty without it. i don't like you
seeing me without hair."
"i could care less if you had hair, what matters to me
is you. that's all that i'll ever need." and he pecked
my lips.
i pulled away. "but the hair is a plus." i added in,
and kept kissing him.
"yes." he pulled away. "the hair is a plus."
and he continued to kiss me while he pulled my bandana off, and
threw it to the floor.
