Young And Broken
Chapter Seventeen
It all happened in a blur. Just as a life-taking bullet charged at me, Kameron sprang from his hiding spot in the corner and jumped in its path. It hit him in his left shoulder, only inches from his heart. His uncle’s eyes grew with fear when he realized what he had done and he ran out of the house. Mortified and stunned, it took me a while to finally realize what had happened. Then, I looked down at Kameron. He was scarcely breathing, and his eyes were closed.
“Kameron, you idiot, look at what you did to yourself!” I scream.
“Ever…” He groans.
“Kameron…Kameron stay with me. I’m going to get help, don’t worry.” I scooped him into my arms, nearly dropping him, and struggled to carry him up the stairs. When we made it to the upstairs, I searched around the hut for a phone, and found one in the kitchen. I immediately dialed Kameron’s mother.
“Hello? Who’s this?” His mother asked from the other line.
“Mrs. Gram? It’s Ever.”
“Oh, Ever, thank goodness you called! I haven’t heard from Kameron in days, and I am worried sick! I sent out a search warrant for the two of you, and even posted flyers around town. Where in heavens are you?”
“Mrs. Gram, it’s a very long story. Basically, your son is dying, and I need your help to bring him to a hospital. You need to hurry.”
“Oh my goodness! Where are you? Ever, I’m getting in the car now. Is my baby okay? Please tell me he is!” She starts to hyperventilate.
“We are in his uncle’s hut in the middle of the woods. Please, Mrs. Gram, hurry.”
“Why are you at my brother’s house?” She demands. “He is a lunatic!”
“We know. I’ll explain everything when you get here.” I hung up the phone and ran back to Kameron, who I had laying on a couch in the neighboring room.
“Kameron, it’s going to be okay. Help is coming, but you gotta stay with me.” I whisper in his ear. Blood dripped from his wound and onto the couch and floor.
“Ever…” He says again.
“What is it?” I stroke his head, trying to calm him.
“It hurts…” He coughs, and blood drips from his mouth.
“I know, I know. You are so brave, and I love you. You can’t leave me, you have to be strong. Do it for me, okay?” Before he can respond, I hear a car pull into the drive-way, so I lift his limp body off of the couch and stumble outside. His mother gasps when she sees us and rushes out of the car to retrieve her son from my arms. Her face looks like she could be sick.
“Kameron! Oh Kameron, I am going to get you help. Ever, get in the car.” I run to the passenger side of her small car, and she gets in after laying Kameron in the back seat. The whole drive to the hospital, Kameron continuously coughed and groaned. I felt so horrible. This whole thing was my entire fault. He wouldn’t be hurting right now if it wasn’t for me.
“Ever, what happened over these last few days?” She asks me.
“It’s a long story: Kameron picked me up in his new truck and we went to the drive-in. On our way home, he took a wrong turn and we ended up in the middle of the woods. Neither of us had cell phone service, so we decided to get out of the car and try to find civilization. While doing so, a man came up behind Kameron and hit him with a log, which knocked him out, and then kidnapped me. He chained me up in his basement and tortured me. Then, after two or three days, Kameron showed up and helped me escape, but the man found out. When he went to shoot me so I couldn’t leave, Kameron jumped in front of me and the bullet impaled him. Then the man, who is supposedly your brother, left us, so I searched his house for a phone and then called you.” After telling the whole story, I noticed her eyes grow very big. She didn’t respond, but her driving became much faster.
After another ten silent minutes in the car, we finally arrived at the hospital. Mrs. Gram brought Kameron inside, and I followed close behind. The doctors’ rushed to get him on a stretcher and brought him into an examining room that his mother and I couldn’t enter, so I called my mother, or aunt.
“Hello?” She said.
“Mom, it’s Ever.”
