Over It
Chapter Two, Part 1
Luckily, I didn't have any more classes with Meg before lunch. But I did have a few with Lucy and Claire. In 4th Period Language Arts, I was forced to sit between the two of them, while they were constantly texting each other and giggling to themselves.
"We're going to be doing a lot of projects in this class," Mrs. Burcham was explaining. "I want you to write two people you'd most likely want work with, and one person you absolutely can not work with."
I looked around the room. There were plenty of people I knew I could get along with in this class. Charlie Bryce hung out with my friends and I a lot, and Samantha Gregory was super nice, but I didn't know her that well. There was also Alison Reynolds, who I got pretty close with last year in Drama Club, and Malory St. John, who was quiet but really fun to talk to. The only problem would be having to decide who I didn't want to work with more-- Lucy or Claire.
I couldn't help but steal a glance at both of their papers. Of course, they had each other written down. Claire also had Charlie (big surprise. Everyone knew she'd had a crush on him since 7th grade.) But I was surprised to see that my name wasn't written as the person she couldn't work with. In stead, she put Collin Pierce, the troubled yet lovable pothead. When I looked at Lucy's paper, though, there was my name in neat, bubbly handwriting. Except, it wasn't where I had expected it to be. It was right next to Claire's. Lucy wanted to work with me.
"Maybe it's a trick," Candace considered after I explained this to my friends on the way to the cafeteria.
Sara shook her head, "Meg was acting weird this morning, too. Like nothing had ever happened! She was all, 'Oh my god, Les, I love your hair!'"
We all sat down at the usual table, the biggest in the cafeteria. It was supposed to fit 8, but we always managed 10. Julia, Candace, Sara, and I, along with Alison Reynolds, Samantha Gregory, Sierra Helms, Natalie Samuels, Kristen Fowler, Abby Jones, and Madison Lauring. Last year, before the 3-day-weekend incident, there were 11 at that table.
But now Meg sat at a smaller table of 5, with Lucy, Claire, Laura Evans, and Vanessa White. Of course, Laura and Vanessa were only replacements of us. Vanessa was leaning over, clinging to Megs words. Meg may have made Lucy and Claire top of the popular list, but Vanessa and Laura were forever wannabes.
