| When Forever Ends|
part sixteen
We basically just passed and shot for about an hour, and when they needed a break, we went back to Griffin's house, which happened to be right behind the soccer field. I met his mother, younger brother, and younger sister. His parents were divorced, so I didn't meet his father. His little sister, Destiny, was about five. She waved at me shyly and went back to coloring. His little brother, Evan, was probably in the eighth grade. He would not leave me alone.
Griffin's mother hugged me, and Evan said, "Don't break her. She's hot." Griffin smacked him over the head and he shut up. He didn't try to stop holding my hand, though.
I told Griffin and Nate that I was going to go back to the field, and they said they wanted to come. Griffin ended up staying home because his father ended up taking their family to the Gasho.
It was awkward just practicing with Nate, though. He was really trying hard to show off his sweet side. While we were passing back and forth, he told me something very personal.
"I know you hate me, Jade. But there's something you should know."
"I don't hate you, Nate. Tell me anyway, though," I replied.
"Well. When I was seven my dad left me and my mom. I know I sound like an idiot, but I think that's why I act like such a jerk. He said he was going to get a new curtain for my window upstairs. And you know the last thing I said to him? 'Dad, can you bring me M&Ms? If you remember?' I always wonder if he even got me those M&Ms. If he even gave it a second thought."
I was speechless. I've never heard anything so deep come from Nate. Ever. Tears were coming to my eyes, and his too.
