My thoughts exactly. This quote was floating around on tumblr a while back, and earned the same "omg so true" reaction. As if evil first began existing on 12/21/12, and nothing bad had ever happened before then. And I agree that it's pointless to wallow in how bad our world is; you aren't helping a situation if you're just saying that there's a problem, you're just complaining.
