Unbroken
Chapter 4
*BEEP BEEP BEEP*
Oh crap, today was my first day of school.
I sat up, rested my elbows on my knees and ran my fingers through my hair.
Woohoo. This was gonna be super fun. Not.
In the end of October? Yup, everyone was gonna know I was the new kid.
I got up, slipped on some skinny jeans,
a big comfy grey sweater, a tank top, and some sandals.
I brushed by teeth, washed my face, put my watch on, and did my makeup.
Then I grabbed my backpack, which was empty, and headed out the door.
I only had an idea where it was, but I managed to get there.
And let me just say, this school was huge. Like, massive.
I walked through the front doors and to the front desk.
"Hi" I said to the lady at the desk, "I'm new, could I have my schedule?"
She looked up and smiled.
"Hi, Haylie? Is it?"
"Hayden."
"Hayden, right." she picked up a few papers and handed them to me.
"That's your schedule, and a map of the school for you to find your classes."
I looked down at the papers.
"If you need any help navigating around the school, just come back here.
We can find someone to help you."
I smiled "Okay. Thank you."
"Have a nice day." she called as I walked into the hall.
The halls were loud, and the cliques were much more distinct.
The jocks had their letterman jackets on,
and the plastics heels clicked on the linoleum floor.
I could almost smell the paint and pencil as I walked by the artsy kids to my locker.
I scanned the locker for 713, and once I found it, I tried the code they gave me.
The lock clicked open, and I stuffed my helmet in there. It just fit.
I shut the locker and rested my back against it.
Looks like I had chemistry first.
The bell rang and I walked to where chemistry class was on the map.
I sat down quickly, trying to blend in with the rest.
The teacher walked in, picked up his roster, and immediately made me hate him.
"Looks like we have a new student."
He scanned the room until he found a new face, and unfortunately stopped on mine.
"Ah, there you are. Come on up."
He waved me over to the front of the class. I could feel myself blushing as I walked up.
"Everyone, this is Hayden.
She's new here from Rhode Island and I'd like everyone to make her feel welcome."
Bullshit. I thought.
I heard a few whispers between the girls.
"Ay! Hayden!" a boy called out.
I looked up and saw the blonde messy beach hair and the blue eyes of a familiar face.
It was Ryan, one of the five guys from last summer.
I smiled, even though I wasn't looking forward to seeing him,
it was nice to see someone I knew. It wasn't him. But it was a friend.
He nudged his friend as I sat back down.
"Please get with your chemistry partner. Hayd---"
"Don't worry Mr. B, I'll be her partner." Ryan said as he slid into the seat next to me,
not giving the teacher time to protest.
"What about me?" his friend laughed.
"Matt!! This is my girl! We got a year to catch up on." he joked back.
I giggled. He turned to me, his sky blue eyes smiling at me.
"So how you been Hayden?"
"Okay," I lied, smiling at him, "I'm surprised you remembered my name."
He laughed, "With a pretty face like yours, how could I?"
I blushed. Luckily the teacher passed out papers, because I had no idea how to respond.
"This is your lab for today, you're expected to be finished by the time the bell rings."
I turned to Ryan
"How about you? How have you been?"
"I've been great. Summer was awesome. Everything's good.
Will and Mike graduated last year."
So that eliminated two more of the five guys. Two gone, one down, two to go.
"Oh really? Did they go on to college?"
"Yeah, both went to University of Florida."
"Go Gators!"
"Yeah, the parties there are mad cool. They're having a Halloween one tomorrow night. You should come. I'll show you 'round. Introduce you to a couple people.
Show you who you should and who you shouldn't hang around with." He winked.
"Alright, yeah. Sounds cool. I'll be there. Thanks for inviting me."
"No problem. They'll be happy to see you."
We caught up as we did the lab.
He was on the football team now, his letterman jacket was still on his old seat.
His birthday was in a few weeks, and he was going to be a male stripper for Halloween.
What a surprise. I forgot how fun he was.
"What're you gonna be?" he asked, "A bunny, or a cat, or a police officer?"
"One of those cliche costumes girls get to look slutty?" I laughed
"No, no I actually haven't gotten one yet. I probably should.
I will after school today. You wanna come help me?"
"Yeah sure, I got football though, so you might have to wait a little."
"Yeah that's fine. Text me."
We exchanged numbers as the bell rang.
He walked away and I realized, not once did he bring up him.
