    Macklemore.
So I'm currently enrolled in a Public Speaking class in school. The first assignment was to write a speech on anything. It could only last from 2-3 minutes. So, I chose Macklemore. I thought you guys might enjoy it.
"When I was asked the question, 'What are you going to do for your speech?' I answered with, 'Macklemore.' No one really knew who Macklemore was, so to describe him, I said, 'The guy who sings Thrift Shop.' Instantly, everyone knows who I'm talking about. And you guys kind of gave me weird looks or giggled, like, 'How is this girl going to write a 2 minute speech on a guy who sings about thrift shopping?'
"Well, that guy is actually named Ben Haggerty. Ben was born June 19, 1983, in Seattle, Washington. In the year 2000, when he was 16, he began his music carreer. He released an album under the name of Prof. Macklemore. The album's sales were minimal.
"In 2005, Macklemore began abusing substances. OxyContin, in specific. He hit rock bottom to the point where he lost everything; his home, his family, and even his music carreer. In 2008, after 3 years of drug addiction, he finally decided to clean himself up. He was sober by 2009.
"The Heist was the next album to be released. This album was released under the name Macklemore. He dropped the Prof. The Heist features Thrift Shop, but it also has songs like Otherside and Same Love. On this album, Macklemore talks about adolescent violence, suicide, gay marriage and drug addiction. In his song Otherside, where he profiles substance abuse, he uses the quote:
"You're stuck, looking in a mirror like I can't believe what I've become. Swore I was gonna be someone, and growing up, everyone always does. We sell our dreams and our potential to escape through that buzz.
"Same Love describes Macklemore's views on gay marriage and gay rights. In that song, he uses the line:
"It's the same hate that caused war over religion. Gender to skin color. The complexion of your pigment. The same fight that led people to walk-outs and sit-ins. It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference. Live on and be yourself.
"And this man is famous for the line: I wear your grandad's clothes. I look incredible.
"Macklemore is so much better than Thrift Shop. Macklemore is an inspiration and my idol. He's the reason why I keep pushing myself to be better and to make the right descions. He's such a poetic genius and it's disgusting that he's famous for potentially the worst song he'll ever produce. Macklemore is not the guy who sings Thrift Shop. Macklemore is the man who's attempting to change the genre of rap and hip hop music.
"That is Macklemore. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you write a 2 minute speech on the man who sings about thrift shops."

WHEN WE WERE FIVE, THEY ASKED US WHAT WE WANTED TO BE WHEN WE GREW UP. OUR ANSWERS WERE THINGS LIKE 'PRESIDENT', 'ASTRONAUT' OR IN MY CASE, 'BALLERINA'.
WHEN WE WERE TEN, THEY ASKED AGAIN. WE ANSWERED 'ROCKSTAR', 'COWBOY' OR IN MY CASE, 'GOLD MEDALIST'.
BUT NOW THAT WE'VE GROWN UP, THEY WANT A SERIOUS ANSWER. WELL, HOW ABOUT THIS: WHO THE H.E.L.L KNOWS?
THIS ISN'T THE TIME TO MAKE HARD AND FAST DECISIONS. THIS IS THE TIME TO MAKE MISTAKES. TAKE THE WRONG TRAIN AND GET STUCK SOMEWHERE. FALL IN love ... A LOT. MAJOR IN PHILOSOPHY BECAUSE THERE'S NO WAY TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF THAT. CHANGE YOUR MIND AND CHANGE IT AGAIN BECAUSE NOTHING'S PERMANENT. SO, MAKE AS MANY MISTAKES AS YOU CAN. THAT WAY, SOMEDAY WHEN THEY ASK US WHAT WE WANNA BE, WE WON'T HAVE TO GUESS.
    WE'LL KNOW.

    My Speech on Religion.
Separation of church and state needs to be more rigid because people feel the need to use the bible to create or destroy laws, there are many people with different religions who don’t support that God, and it’s simply showing that while the amendment says, “Freedom of Religion,” it’s not actively enforced.
The bible is a factor when making laws, fact. I grew up in a Catholic household. I attended Sunday School until 8th grade and prayer was always required at the dinner table. But when I entered high school, I realized that this God that I’ve been praying to is one I’ve never actually believed in. When I told my grandmother this, she cried and she's never looked at me the same way again. And it was then that I realized just how big of a role religion plays in relationships between people. And while religion does have a role on whether or not my grandmother and I would remain friends, it shouldn’t play a role on my basic rights as a human. People like to use the Bible as this big excuse—abortion is wrong because the bible says so. Gay marriage is wrong because the bible says so. Assisted suicide and euthanasia are wrong because the bible says so. But there are 63 million Americans—20% of the country’s population—who don’t follow the bible. If I want an abortion, I should be allowed to get one no matter how the next person feels about abortion. It’s my body, and I should be able to do what I want with it and I shouldn’t be prevented from a book that I don’t even believe in. I heard a quote once, and I’m not sure who said it, but it went: “Telling someone that they can’t get married because of your religion is like telling that person they can’t eat that cookie because you’re on a diet.” If you don’t support abortion, don’t get an abortion. If you don’t support gay marriage, don’t get gay married. But the first amendment clearly states, “Freedom of Religion,” for a reason. The bible shouldn’t be involved.
There are many people in America who don’t believe in Christianity, fact. Have you ever noticed that every day, when you stand up to take a pledge to your country, whose first amendment includes Freedom of Religion, that you take an oath to a God? Or when someone is testifying in court, and they place their hand on the bible, and they pledge to tell the truth, “so help [them] God?” Well, what about the people who don’t believe in that God, or in any God at all? While I understand that these rules have been used for so many years and it’s difficult to just remove them without causing controversy, you have to understand that times change. Think of how much America itself has changed from the 1800’s. Style, music, society. Ethnicity and religion. It’s all changed. We’re constantly modifying laws to fit the changes of the world around us. While America’s main religion is Christianity, where 80% of Americans identify themselves as Christian, that means that 20% of America’s citizens do not believe or associate their beliefs with the God they are supposed to pledge themselves to every day. 63 million people in America. Other religions that don’t affiliate with the bible include: Native American, Chinese, Buddhism, Atheism and Muslim. Just because Christianity is the majority doesn’t make it a necessity. If you’re going to tell me that you can’t argue against these standards because Christianity is the majority, well, there are still other religions there. One out of every five Americans isn’t Christian and doesn’t follow their beliefs, and they shouldn’t have to.
Freedom of Religion is a right to all humans, fact. I, personally, don’t see it as a big request to completely remove religion from the law. I’m not asking to replace, “One nation under God” with “One nation under no God,” or “One nation under Muhammad.” I’m just asking for it to be removed. I’m not saying that Christianity is a bad thing, it’s just one that I don’t agree with, and one I don’t think I should need to follow. If I want to marry a woman who I’m in love with, hypothetically, then I should have every right to do so. A book that has nothing to do with my beliefs shouldn’t stop me. I’m not saying this country is a disgrace because it’s denying me my rights, because it’s not a disgrace. I just believe that the judicial system needs moderation. Like everything else evolves, laws and regulations should too. I’m not asking for much, and yet to some people, it still seems like too much.
There are three facts I’ve dwelled on: The bible is a factor when making laws, there are many people in America who don’t believe in Christianity, and Freedom of Religion is a basic human right. All of these are true, and all of these need to start being recognized and addressed. Separation of church and state needs to be more rigid. I can honestly say that being told that I shouldn’t tell people my religion or that my religion isn’t something to be proud of is one of the most narrowminded things I’ve ever heard. In an America where everything is evolving and changing and a place where you’re allowed to be different and feel okay about it, people need to start understanding that not everyone believes the same way they do and that a difference in opinion is okay. Differences make the world go round, right? So let me be different. And don’t make me follow your religion’s rules when I have the right that says I shouldn’t have to.
Hate comments will be deleted because I literally have no more f.cks to give.

"GROW UP - get a life."
    excuse me?
I am perfectly content with my life.
I'm not going to change to fit your idea of what a teen can and cannot do.
I don't want to live in a world where my Hogwarts letter was never sent (It got lost in the mail)
Where my closet doesn't lead to Narnia (The passageway is just broken)
Where my book will never lead to the Hundred Acre Wood (Pooh got lost on the way)
Or where magic doesn't exist (Pfft. Like they'd let muggles know of their existence)
I refuse to live in a world where the Doctor doesn't save us regularly (He's off on another planet)
Where Sherlock doesn't solve the hardest crimes (He's still pretending he's dead)
Or where Peter Pan is just a children's story (He's off fighting some pirates)
Or where fantasies are just that - fantasies
Sure, I might be a teenager, but
my mailbox is still checked regularly, my closet searched, my book opened, my window left unlocked.
    "Grow up, get a life"
Yah right. Have fun in the real world.

Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression.
Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job.
The dollar buys a nickel's worth, banks are going bust, shop-keepers keep a gun under the counter, punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere that seems to know what to do.
And there's no end to it.
We know the air is unfit to breathe, our food is unfit to eat. We sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be.
We know things are bad; worse than bad.
They're crazy! It's like everything, everywhere is going crazy.
So, we don't go out anymore; we sit in the house and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller and all we say:
"Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."
Well, I'm not going to leave you alone! I want you to get mad!
I don't want you to protest and I don't want you to riot, I don't want you to write your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write.
I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians or the crime in the street.
All I know is that first, you've got to get mad, you've got to say: "I'm a human being, godd*mn it! My life has value!"
I want you to get up now, I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up, right now, and go to the window. Open it and and stick your head out and yell:
"I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

"This life is what you make it. Not matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes; it's a universal truth. But the good part is that you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your 'friends' -they'll act like it, anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything? They are your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember that sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers? Well, they'll come and go too. And babe, I hate to say it, but most of them - actually... pretty much all of them - are going to break your h e a r t. But you can't give up becuause if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find that h.a.l.f who makes you w h o l e, and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about."

On April 7th, 2013, a dream was realized. Probably more dreams than just one, but still.
In a big city, a slightly smaller division, in a humongous stadium - I saw Green Day live, for the very first time. Some may say, "it's just a band," or "lol, was that your first concert?" Not only was it my first concert, it was the best night of my life. There was this rush of energy throughout the entire space, from the second those life-changing men came out onto the stage to well after the encore ended. It was this spectacular atmosphere, and there was so much noise and love and music.
I remember it like it was yesterday, but as I'm writing this now, it actually was. I remember that day in September that the tour was announced, the day I begged my mom for tickets. The day I came home and she told me that I could go. The day that I placed the order. I remember the day that Billie was sent to rehab, the day that I found out that the concert was post-poned, or even worse, cancelled. I remember the day I found out my concert had been one of the few rescheduled, and I remember the days leading up to the concert.
My dream has always been to met my idols, the men who changed my life and who changed me. I may have not gotten to meet them, but he.ll, even being in the same room has been enough.
These men are my idols, they cut out the mold that I have flowed into. They are an inspiration. A life-changing group. These men have inspired me to pursue art, find more good music, keep living for myself, not others. I can't say they necessarily saved my life, as I was never suicidal, but a change was made. Billie makes me want to be strong, for the sake of my friends and loved ones, he makes me want to be fearless and smile through my tears. Mike makes me want to be the loyal friend, the partner in crime, the one who is always there, no matter what. The best friend. And Tre, well... Tre. He makes me want to go to clown college. [Laughs] No, not really. Tre makes me want to be the person that makes every smile, the one who doesn't give a da.mn about what anyone is going to say. Tre makes me want to be confident, not afraid to make weird noises, or just be crazy.
They make me want to be myself.
On a sub note, I want to say more about Billie. He isn't my favorite member, that is not why I'm writing this, but this is of importance. Billie was sent into rehabilitation after an incident at the iHeartRadio Festival. I will not go into detail, but it was shocking, to say the least. Billie suffers from insomnia and anxiety, amongst other things. He would try to supress stress with alcohol and prescription overdoses. This led to a meltdown, and later, a canceled tour. This seemingly strong man finally broke. Bulletproof, but suddenly an eggshell. He made it through though, the detox, the rehabilitation, the stress and the panic. He survived. I can't materialize into words how proud I am. That he actually finally went to get help. I appreciate that he never goes into anything half-as.sed. It inspired me that he was brave enough to go through with it, get better. Come back better. I couldn't have been prouder of him, seeing him walk back onto that stage, arms up, grinning, waiting for the adoration of their fans.
The entire band knew what to expect, and they got it.
That is just a few sentences of expression about what this group means to me, had I put everything into writing, you'd still be well into your fifties and reading this very piece. I was so excited to see them in person. See the people who made me myself, who made me laugh, smile, and cry, and spend hours and hours on the Internet blogging about them. I wanted to hear Billie's voice and guitar strum in person, and I can tell you that it was the most amazing thing I have ever heard, and nothing will ever, ever compare to it. Jason's guitar, Mike's bass, and Tre's drums brought the room to life, made it all the more loud and energetic. Looking over the balcony, seeing 15,000 other fans there for the same reason as me, to see the people I love. I was almost crying. It was melodic, in an angsty, or sometimes happy way. It was like an injection, the music coursed through my veins, but also unlike an injection, clearing my vision instead of hazing it and sharpening my ears, making me void to the sound around me but making every detail on the stage a trillion times brighter and more noticeable.
You could hear emotional changes, whether Billie Joe was smiling through his singing or not.
    He was.
But there was this feeling. A feeling of accomplishment. Pride.
I'd made it. I'd make my dream become a reality. A two and a half hour reality. It was surreal.
This feeling is inexplicable. There's little tiny bursts of energy within you, burning brighter and brighter and making you grin yet cringe with a bittersweet sorrow. This feeling lasts for a few days, but you realize that after a time it will cease to be dominant. It is a feeling of power, joy, courage. All because of a band, all because of dream, all because of a song, just a single note it enough to send you exploding with overwhelmed endorphins.
Nothing was more important in the moments that concert existed. It may sound cliche but,
"In that moment, I swear we were infinite."
But I was, I felt infinite, like I could go on forever and just stay there and listen and not care about a single thing. I wouldn't trade that feeling for the world.
I had originally planned- or well, hoped, to get a drawing signed, or even a photo with Billie or Mike or Tre. I was not able to this, but that's okay, because with a band like Green Day, eternity is a promise. I will have many more chances later in life, and I swear on the behalf of my Idiot integrity that I will do this. Even when Billie is lugging an oxygen tank behind him as he stage drives, or as Mike's make-up drips off his eventual wrinkles, or even Tre's sparkly unicycle wheelchair rolling around behind the drum set. They will be old and crusty, but still playing, and when there's a show, that's where I'll be.
    There were-
No, there are many great things about Green Day. About their music. About that concert. It would be impossible to list them all, but trust in a person's love for music.
My favorite part of the concert though? I had many. I only wrote about a few of them. The very, very best though?
Billie was clean. Not dru.nk, nor dr.ugged. He was ecstatic to be there, but the ecstasy was natural, not narc.otics. That was the best part. Knowing they were all there in themselves, not in a drug induced haze. Knowing that the sheer beauty of everything there was derived from dedication and talent, not screwed with by a drunken slur.
The best music. The best band. The best night.
    Ever.

    Today was weird.
We had an assembly in the auditorium for some thing about relationships. At some point, Mike, the guy giving the speech, said ''How many girls you've hooked up with doesn't make you a man. A man is someone who respects girls. Where have all of those men gone?" And someone (a guy) said ''They're right here", as if to refer to himself. I thought this was absolutely hilarious because just last week he said I was ugly and that I was going to be a virgin until I'm 30.
