Gray Rain
Plink, plink, plink. The rain hit the window at full force. Wind blew it into the glass with incredible power. Not that it bothered you. You just sat there and stared absentmindedly out at the world around you. Puddles have formed in dips in the road, and the sidewalk. You stand up slowly and stiffly. Your leg is tingling, as if million of microscopic bugs were biting it, telling you it was asleep. You barely notice though, you are still off in your thoughts. Off where no one can touch you. You start to walk, causing the floor to creak and groan in the silent house. There were no lights on, but you could see fine. You turned the corner and came face to face with the door. It is old and worn, but had a warm feeling to it. Your hand hovered over the brass knob, Your fingers curled in towards you palm as you stood there looking at it. With a surge of courage you turn the knob and pull the door open wide. The wind that had once been throwing rain onto the window was now forcing the droplets against your skin. The wind was cool, causing your skin to prickle and goosebumps to form like mountains against your flawless pale skin. You barely noticed any of this as you stared out at the world. You stepped out onto the front porch your feet now wet from the rain sitting on the wood. Your hair was being whipped around fiercely, pieces flying in your face. You continued to walk forward and out into the gray world around you. As you turned in slow circles in the grass you noticed everything was void of color. Almost as if the clouds that hung low in the sky were pulling any color from the earth and into their depths, never to be seen again. Your clothes, now drenched, stuck to your skin, and your hair was plastered to your body. Only a few loose strands flew wildly about. You turned and looked at the world, and how dead looked in that moment.
The rising sun blinded you as you laid on the floor by the window. You sat up and looked out at the world. It was the same place, the same objects from the night before. But now the color was back, and full of life. Everything seemed to buzz with the happiness of the summer rain. You walked back to your spot in the grass and once again started to turn in circles. And though the sky was a variety of pinks and purples, all you could see was gray. And as you turned in your circles all you could see was the dead world from the night before. The gray, the sadness, all void of life. You felt the rain droplets on your skin instead of the warmth of sun's rays. As you stood there you couldn't help but wonder why people didn't see the gray and gloomy side of the world. The side of the world you always saw.
