    Sappho translated by Anne Carson
    Wouldnt it be wonderful
if all our letters could be published
    in the future
    in a more enlightened time

It was spring when we walked together
and you taught me the names of the flowers.
Lily of the valley, pear blossom, Carolina jessamine.
You turned your face to me and I felt that I had
loved you since the billowing sheet of Chaos.
How am I to go on living
    after having felt that?
O, do you remember. Our many, many befores.
    Maybe you hear them, stirring
from a room in you that is older
than womb. You and I did carry
candles down castle corridors as children once.
And we baked bread, and we filled pies!
We wore moonstone on our twisted fingers.
You were boy and I was fish
and when you pulled me from the water I glistened
    and your father was proud.
In the kitchen that evening you cut a lemon
    and squeezed a sliver
    over me, giving me
    moon, rain, the promise
that we would live again someday.

You ask my why all of my writing sounds
sad, but you don't understand the way it
manifests. The way my words are strung
fairy lights, in an empty house at
midnight, trying to make all of the dark
    edges beautiful again.

    ‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
    A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
    to be,
    And oh, to lose.
    A thing for fools, this,
    And a holy thing,
    a holy thing
    to love.
For your life has lived in me,
    your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
    ‘Tis a human thing, love,
    a holy thing, to love
    what death has touched.

I wanna know if you bleed sometimes
    from other people’s wounds,
    and if you dream sometimes
that this life is just a balloon —
that if you wanted to, you could pop,
    but you never would
‘cause you’d never want it to stop.

I want you to tell me all the ways you’ve been unkind.
Tell me all the ways you’ve been cruel.
Tell me, knowing I often picture Gandhi at ten years old
beating up little boys at school.
If you were walking by a chemical plant
where smokestacks were filling the sky with dark black clouds
would you holler “Poison! Poison! Poison!” really loud
    or would you whisper
“That cloud looks like a fish,
and that cloud looks like a fairy!”
Do you believe that Mary was really a virgin?
Do you believe that Moses really parted the sea?
And if you don’t believe in miracles, tell me —
how would you explain the miracle of my life to me?
See, I wanna know if you believe in any god
or if you believe in many gods
    or better yet
    what gods believe in you.
And for all the times that you’ve knelt before the temple of yourself,
have the prayers you asked come true?
And if they didn’t, did you feel denied?
    And if you felt denied,
    denied by who?

    my [grand]mother moved out
    of her body
    decided it
    was no longer worthy
    it couldn't contain her laughter
    she couldn't obey the house
    rules of human
    her spirit
    that young & fresh fever
wanted to call the night her dance club
wanted to try on new clothes
    stay out later
my [grand]mother now wears the world
dresses herself with the tall grass
blushes her cheeks with red clay
she laughs & a forest fire awakens
she laughs & every mountain bows
    to her sharp thunder
    she laughs
& each cicada begins to sing
last night Saint Paul was cloaked in steam:
fog traveled from some distant heat
    no, i think
    you've got it all wrong
someone must have asked my [grand]mother
    to dance

"Whatever you give a woman, she will
    make greater.
If you give her sp.erm, she'll give you
    a baby ;
If you give her a house, she will
    give you a home ;
If you give her groceries, she'll give
    you a meal ;
If you give her a smile, she'll give you her
    heart.
    She multiplies and enlarges
    what is given to
her ; so if you give her any cr.ap,
be prepared to get a ton
    of sh.t. "

50% of girls think they're fat.
100% of society should stop insulting girls on their appearances.

i hate the fact that they told you how beautiful you are. not because it isn't true, but only because they used it as a way to get closer to you. a shower of compliments that made you feel unique, made your soul glow, and made your heart feel safe. only to turn around and hurt you with poisonous actions that don't fit all the sweet words. i hate that they told you you're beautiful, because when i tell you that you are, you remember the last time you were called beautiful, and feel the opposite.

Oh darling, don't you ever grow up
Don't you ever grow up, just stay this little
Oh darling, don't you ever grow up
Don't you ever grow up, it could stay this simple
I won't let nobody hurt you
Won't let no one break your heart
And no one will desert you
Just try to never grow up, never grow
    up
