I am the only artistic member in my family
I have a mom, a dad, a brother, and a twin sister
None of them like art, writing, or poetry
In fact, they all think its weird that I like art, writing, and poetry
One time, a poem I had written fell off the table where my dad was sitting
He picked it up and read it
Then he gave me a really weird look
He didn't say "wow, this is really good" or
"i didn't know you wrote poetry, that's neat"
he didn't say anything, but just looked at me funny
and i said "what?"
he replied "well i thought you were kinda weird anyway, now
you write poetry too?"
and i said "um, you are saying that poets are weird?"
and he said "yea, most of them are suicidal and weird"
I wanted to say "most poets have more talent in their fingers,
than you have in your ignorant brain"
But i didn't say that

Aren't dads the best?

I love poetry, and I write it myself, maybe if you showed your parents a poem that would really relate to them somehow, or touch their heart they would like it too..Hopefully..

I have tried showing my poems to my parents, i instantly regretted it, because they didn't think it was beautiful or inspiring, they thought it was weird....i don't want to give them another reason to think i am "weird" so i just share my writing online....people online are much nicer about it anyway

And this is why I never share my writing with my parents.....

Yeah, I get that. I think I can really relate to this, not because nobody I know is artistic in any way, but because they think literature is a waste of time. Because of that, I let them know, in many ways, that I will not follow their patterns, just to get rid of unwanted expectations. After generations and generations of doctors and engineers, I almost always answer with "psychology and philosophy" when people ask what I'd want to study. Now my parents are used to the idea of me being a bit weird. So now I almost always skip the advice about me wasting my time on arts and literature
