I agree so much with this, people have a serious problem glamorizing self hate, self harm, suicide, mental disorders, eating disorders, social anxiety and depression-I suffer from anorexia, social anxiety and self harm-it makes me so mad that so many people out there are acting like complete idiots turning these horrible problems into something beautiful or trendy...it is sick the way people seem to want to be "sick", you know? I mean its so weird! normal healthy people don't admire mental disorders-which means a lot of the people out there promoting this stuff like its cute are clearly off in some way, and that's pretty disturbing when you think about it-good job with this message, though-sometimes you have to be straight forward with things like this-its the best way to get your message out there

Listen Allison is the nicest person on this website she would never call these sad illnesses sick. What I think she was trying to say was sick is the way the media is trying to glamorize these illnesses.

Everyone, I believe Allison is referring to the ****media*** about glamorizing these sad illnesses, not you guys.
Yes, some people do take advantage of their sad diseases and turn it into attention, but some people actually suffer with it. Social media make it sound like it's a beautiful thing and say things like "It's okay if you cut your scars are beautiful"

No, cutting is NOT okay. I really wish I could help anyone who does, it's sad and you're harming your beautiful body. I just really wish people could find a way to end the pain without causing more pain. (No, not death. xD)

Guys, let's all just relax, I think that things have gone a bit far in the comments, I don't think Allison meant it to be so derogatory.

I agree with you. Every time i look at someone who willing cut themselves I think of my friend who died of cancer and the other one who is slowly going. They would do anything to trade their life for yours and you just waste it by cutting yourself. If you do cut yourself know that life is special and you only have one of them. I can think of a thousand people who have it worse. Cutting yourself shows the world your weakness. Stop cutting and show the world the strong person I know you could be! I mean, damn, the that made you was the strongest out of the batch. Just think about that.

I do not agree with this quote AT ALL! You're basically saying that anybody that has any of these disorders is pathetic and sick. You shouldnt put something like that on this website because Witty is for people who need inspiration and help with depression, etc. NOT to feel even worse about their self. I have depression, eating disorder, ADHD, and anxiety and there is nothing glamorous about it and people don't glamourize it.. they tell people that they have it to try and get help for it.

You don't agree with it because you don't understand it. Whether you want to believe it or not people do glamorize mental disorders and that's what I think needs to stop. I'm talking about people who make it look like going into depression is makes you beautiful. I'm not bashing anyone with mental disorders. If you have any types of disorders you should be happy that I posted this considering the fact that I'm saying that your disorders really do affect your daily life, and it's terrible that people are glorifying them and turning them into pretty trends.

This quote isn't addressing people with these issues who understand the struggle; this quote is addressing people who want "to go anorexic" or think that depression makes girls more beautiful. And, yes, there ARE people like that.

some of this i can agree with but other parts i cannot because my selfharm scars i think are beautiful i've embraced them and i refuse to think of them as 'sick' anymore or that doing that was gross. my social anxiety i don't get what's wrong with thinking my shy and awkwardness in a way is beautiful? maybe people glamorize it to help them suffer less? I undertsand some things shouldn't be glamorized or whatever but saying all these things are " sick" probably make everyone who is or who has suffered from these thing feel even worse about themseleves, good jobb.

But you're trying to say I haven't suffered from any of these when I have. I don't care what you say, I don't think it was cute when I cry alone in my room because I'm too scared to go to social event because of my social anxiety. Or when I've had to have my mom pick me up from my friend's house because socializing and talking make me so uncomfortable that I feel like crying, even around people I know. That isn't cute or beautiful. Simply being shy and awkward is different from social anxiety anyway. And I'm not trying to shame self-harm scars but more and more people are beginning to think it's a good solution to letting their anger out when we need to encourage people that it isn't. I think you would agree that if one of your friends starting self harming you wouldn't be like "This shows you're a strong person and this is your proof," because that gives them the okay to keep doing it; you would be like, "No, it really harms you physically and you need to stop and get help."

Did it ever occur to our self-righteous, oh-so-clean-skinned friend, that some people can't help self-hate, mental disorders, eating disorders, social anxiety OR depression?? You're saying all this like the person has a fuking CHOICE. It would be absolutely lovely if one could simply stop 'glamorizing' as you put it, however most of us don't know how. I mean, /mental disorders/?? HOW IN BLOODY HELL can someone help /that/?? And as I myself have been struggling with depression for years, I really feel the need to punch you dead in the face right now for even suggesting that we are depressed by choice. And as someone who has trouble being in a room full of people, your adding social anxiety to your list is just a slap to the face. These are real problems people have. Think next time before you walk all over people who have them.

ChocoTaco · 1 decade ago
Excuse you. Glamorizing, for your information, is making it look amazing and beautiful that people have these disorders. I think you're confused because I'm not saying "stop being depressed" I'm telling people that they need to stop making mental disorders sound so tragically beautiful. "Your adding social anxiety to your list is just a slap to the face" I'm sorry but I've suffered from social anxiety and know extremely damn well that it's not something people should think is cute that's why I'm stating it. And you ASSUME that I'm "clean-skinned" and that I have this easy life in which I can say this? I'm saying this because these are real problems and people are saying they have things like anxiety disorders to make them sound more interesting and to give themselves a life story. I'm saying this because it needs to be shoved in people's face that there's nothing cute or quirky about crying alone in your room with a blade to your stomach. I'm saying this because I'm sick of mental disorders becoming a trend. Whether you want to believe it or not there would be a lot less people cutting themselves if we weren't constantly saying things like "scars shows that you're strong and beautiful" or "suicidal people are just angels who want to go home." I'm not taking back a word I say. It is all sick. Every part of it. If I haven't experienced any of what I said in my quote I wouldn't have made it in the first place. And yeah, I know people suffer from depression, and that's why it's in the quote.

***You're AN idiot.
Sorry, had to fix this. Let's not name call, that's really low, there are more mature ways to handle things. You're an awesome person from what I've seen, but it hurts me to see you calling people names. It's completely understandable if you don't agree with this, but please, please, don't call names. That's a major reason why people have horrible self-confidence, because they get put down.

The whole 'these are real problems' is the /exact/ point of this quote. She's saying people need to stop using these as some quirky personality trait because it's a real problem, because some people simply say that they have these problems because they think it's 'cute'. And /that/ is the disgusting part. /That/ is what she is saying for people to stop doing. Not to stop having mental disorders and the like. Nowhere does it even imply that people are depressed by choice. Also, to just automatically assume that somebody is a 'self-righteous, oh-so clean-skinned friend' because of some freakin' quote is jumping to conclusions, y'know. It's horrible that people, yourself included, have to deal with this kind of stuff, and you have a right to be angry with people who do think that such things are simply 'choice', but, please, for the love of everything, actually read the quote first and decide who is the correct person to direct your angry at.

Glamorizing a problem isn't the same thing as coping with it. She's aware that they are real problems that people struggle with and wants people to stop considering them to be "beautiful" or "interesting" personality traits that somehow improve the people that suffer from them.

Self harm scars are not beautiful. I don't care how much of an a.sshole that makes me look like when I say that. The constant glorifying of mental disorders/cutting/suicide is just triggering people into harming their body. That's not cute. I'm not saying someone with self harm scars isn't beautiful but the fact that people are calling them a "tiger who's earned their stripes" makes more people think that they need physical proof of their suffering.
thumbs up 1 thumbs down reply

PoeticAcid* · 1 decade ago
self harm is no joke, but what I am trying to say is some can't control it. Now there are a bunch of petty fades that pass by, but some keep it true. it becomes at they know and it a sense becomes beautiful because it is more then just a harm, it is a way of life. it should be praised, but a personal secret. but the expression of a tiger and strips is just a phrase. don't get but hurt over stupidness. now we don't know who legitly harms and those who don't. but physical proof is worthless compared, plus not just anyone can self harm.

There is absolutely nothing beautiful about putting a blade to skin and hurting the only body you were given. What would even possess someone to think that's beautiful? It's completely and utterly heartbreaking that someone would feel so desperate for relief that they feel the need to hurt their own body.

The thing is, it's harming yourself. Damaging something beautiful. Artists use paper as their canvas because it doesn't hurt anything, it's a form of art, and it's a way of expressing theirselves. Tattoo artists use small needles on purpose to place a piece of art that has meaning and symbolism.
Giving yourself scars to remind yourself of the pain you've endured is a really, REALLY bad idea. You could get infections from open wounds. (Same with tattoos, but you know what I mean) I think I am uglier than a pile of dead elephants. xD Your profile picture scares me slightly.
You're a beautiful person, and you don't deserve to put yourself through pain.
