Me: I've never self-harmed
Society: oh
Someone else: I haven't self-harmed in three months
Society: YOU'RE SO STRONG! MUCH RESPECT

Me: I've never done drugs
Society: Oh
Someone else: I haven't done LSD in a month
Society: Congrats you are such a respectable person (':

Me: I've never been over 130 lbs
Society: Oh
Someone else: I used to be 400 lbs but now I'm only 350!
Society: Wow! you skinny thing good for you. You must have so much control!

Why are we praising people for suddenly
acting like a normal member of society
when other people have been doing that forever

I partially agree and disagree here. I personally understand the self harm. Ive been through some rough sh/t and havent even thought about picking up a blade. The drugs is the same way. I dont think anyone should be praised though, maybe acknowledge but not put on a pedestal for either never doing it or stopping, both are incredible feats.

On the other hand, I dont think being overweight should be included with this. Its a completely different ball game. There are so many reasons as to why someone could be overweight. They could have low metabolism, they might not have time to be in shape, and some people just have a generally bigger build. I personally am one who has a bigger frame and has a few extra pounds, basically Im not considered skinny, but Im in shape. I do everything necessary to be "skinny" but Im not. Also there is no true "normal" member on society, there isnt one "normal" person in the world.

Oh dear.

Listen, just because everybody else has a wad up their panties doesn't mean anything. I for one, completely agree with you. I think you're totally right, and anybody that disagree's with you is a person who babies the mess ups in our 'society'.

Oh youre overweight? IM THERE FOR YOU YOU ARE THE STRONGEST PERSON I KNOW.

what a load of crxp.

You're right,
errbody else is wrong,
so dont let them get to you. They shoot all my opinions down too.

I both agree and disagree with this quote.
The key factor that we have to keep in mind is that everyone is different. Some people are more susceptible to addiction than others. Some people are born with mental illness. And yes, some people are born without a high metabolism.
If a person who has just one or even all of this things and still manages to resist temptation, then hell yeah they deserve a party.
If someone, despite all that they've been through, manages to pull themselves out of it then they also deserve praise.

I was born with a high metabolism, I can't gain very much weight. I don't think I should be praised for staying at a healthy weight because I could be eating like a pig and I'd still stay around the same weight, I just wouldn't be healthy.
I guess this is the end of my mini rant.

i completley disagree with the last part of that, people should be praised for staying healthy. Having a low metablosim is no excuse for being overweight, if you have a high metabolism then great, eat whatever you want. iIf you dont, then you need to watch what you eat and exersice im sorry but i'll have more respect for you if you're healthy than if you're overweight

Yes I see what you're saying and agree with it but that wasn't the point of the last part.
I was just born this way. Before I began exercising and eating healthily I was still skinny and seemed to be in shape to people.
You cant just look at me and know that I work hard, but if you have a conversation with me about it then I will accept the compliment.

But for the most part, I completely see what you're saying. I have family members who just don't put in the effort and are putting themselves in danger because they don't wanna put the work into it.

Yeah... well somebody starts drugs, or self harming or over eating for a reason 99% of the time. Loss, abuse sadness, they have had to overcome more than YOU, and that is why. It is really hard to quit an addiction, much harder than making the choice to stay away.

it is much more difficult to quit an addiction than it is to resist doing something you've never done.

i always give people more praise when i hear they've never self harmed or done drugs because if this world hasn't brought them to that stage yet, and hopefully it never will, i give them so much respect.

They are people that have gotten caught in bad addictions and bad things, and are trying to change their life. There's nothing wrong with praising them, it makes them feel better about them changing their life.

Because it takes insane control
to stop self-harming and doing
drugs. And it's crazy hard to lose
that much weight. They deserve
to be praised.
thumbs up 7 thumbs down reply

hey_itsgabby · 1 decade ago
it also takes control to not give into drugs smoking etc. when the media and other people are pressuring you into it

It's not really the person society is praising, but the difficult journey the person went through to get to where they are. That's why they're so strong
thumbs up 4 thumbs down reply

hey_itsgabby · 1 decade ago
i get that but still, people who have been acting like normal memebers of society all there lives get nothing
thumbs up 0 thumbs down reply

ThatLostGirl* · 1 decade ago
Not nothing necessarily, they get the respect and self-satisfaction of being the role models for everyone having a hard time. They're the people that the ones having a hard time turn to, because they want to be like them
