Unexpected Love
Chapter 1
School. One word that defines all future. Grades define college,
college defines career, career defines money, money defines
limits.
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock beeping that annoying
beep it does on a Monday morning at the beginning of the school
year. The sound that determines whether you will have a good day
or a bad day depending on how deep of sleep you were in.
I get up and slowly get ready for school, slowly tie my Converse
All-Stars and then flare my jeans back out. I put on my favorite
Harley Davidson tshirt and quickly brushed my out-of-this-world
hair. My mom was already ready and out in the car, she was going
to leave with or without me at 6:30. I glanced at my phone, 6:25.
I hurried and grabbed a notebook and my over-the-shoulder bag. I
shut the door to the house and jumped in the car at 6:29. Mom
gave me a look and started the car. I cranked up a country
station and we started to my school.
First day of Freshman year. I was kind of nervous.. I don't
usually get this way, but instead of worring too much I just
pulled my sleeves over my hands and focused on the music.
For the past couple of months, music is all that has made
sense.
We pulled up to the door, I was the first one here, like always..
Since my mom works three hours away, she drops me off before I'm
really supposed to be here. I walk in and get my homeroom slip.
Gym, great. Then I walk to the Commons area.
Being the first one here is difficult. You don't know where to
sit. And being a Freshman doesn't help. I've been in this
building several times before, the middle school is next door but
the cafeteria is over here so this is where we ate. But I've
never sat over here in the mornings. I have no idea where to
sit.. And I'm the only one here..
I glance around. Now what?
I tentively sit in the back of the left side at the end of one of
the long lunch tables we have. I sit there for about 30 minutes
before anybody else even shows up.
And the first person to show up, just had to be him.
One of the coolest, smartest, hottest, most popular, sporty,
cowboyish guy in our school. A junior. He had to walk in. He got
his slip, and then, instead of worring about where to sit like I
did, just walked nonchaleantly and sat down next to me.
I had met him once personally at an honor band audition.. one
where he watched me walk out crying. But I had never really
talked to him since. But he sat down next to me. Did I sit in his
group's normal spot? Or is he mocking me? Or what? This isn't
normal..
He smiles at me and then glances down at his boots. His jeans are
a little muddy, but I know he works.
"How are you doin'?" he asks nicely, in his sweet southern
accent. Down here in Tennessee we all have it. It's sweet like
molasses.
I take in a quick breath and smile a little, "Pretty good, not
lookin' foward to school really... You?"
"Good, good.. tired from workin' so much.. It's been.. a long
summer," he says.
"Yeah," I agree, "it has.. but I kind of wish it wasn't over
yet.." Truth was, I just wanted to sleep, not so much into the
whole, not see friends for 3 months thing...
"Me either..." he admits.
By now more people had shown up, his friends were probably here.
He glanced up at some of his football or baseball buddies and he
nodded at them. He smiled at me real quick and said,
"Well, I guess I'll see you round then, you're in band too
right?"
I nodded.
"Cool, guess I'll see you later then," he smiled again.
"Guess so," I said, looking toward my friend Jade who had just
walked in.
"Wait, you're Emery right?"
"Yeah," I laughed, "and you're Jake?"
He half smiled, "Yeah, well I guess I'll go, see ya."
Jade came over to me. She's my best friend, crazy and all.
"So. You were talkin' to Jaaakkkkeee?" she stretched his name to
full potential.
"Looks like it," I laughed at her.
"Ohh really?" she said sarcastically.
"Yeah..." I replied in the same tone.
"Well then, are ya'll "talkin' " ?" she put quotes around
talking.
"No, we're just band friends.. just friends."
"Band geek buddies.. really? He's way too hot for band."
"Thanks," I said sarcastically, "love you too... but yeah, I
know."
But really, I was as confused as ever. I had no idea what just
happened.. I had no idea what was to come.
So Witty.. This is my 400th quote. You've been there for me in my
ups and downs, thanks for that. Love you guys.
