The Things You Don't Know
Chapter Two,
Part 2
8:45 p.m.
"Aaaand we're into the final
minute of the game here people! The Westwood Serpents have a 21-6
lead over the Springfield Warriors!"
The crowd roared as a black shirt with a
green 11 ran the ball 39 yards into the end zone. I didn't
really see or care. But I do know we ended up winning with a
score of 27-6. After the game, Matt took off his helmet before
leaving the field. I waited where the rest of the players had
left the field for him. When he saw me, his eyes lit up with joy.
He charged at me with his arms out like he was going to tackle
me, then wrapped his arms around me and spun me around when he
lifted me up, shouting, "You came! We won! You must be my
good luck charm Emily!"
I laughed. A real, genuine laugh. The
one I thought was gone. I haven't done that in almost 3
years. Not since my brother died.
"Of course I came! " I smiled
at him. He gave me a squeeze and then put me down.
His smile started to fade. "Why is
your face pink Emily?"
"Because it's cold."
"Don't lie to me. That's
not a cold face red. Emily, what happened? There looks like
there's a hand print on your face, and not the kind you get
from leaning it on your face for a while."
"I-it's nothing. Promise."
I gave him a half-smile, trying to reassure him.
He sighed. "If there's
something going on, please tell me when you're
ready."
"Kay."
"Well, all the guys are celebrating
tonight, but I don't really want to go party. Would you maybe
want to do something?" He smiled hopefully at me.
"Um, I might be able to. Could we
like, go get hot chocolates or something? I'm freezing. And I
need to get home."
"Yeah, sounds great! Give me like
five minutes to change and we can go." He smiled and then
jogged towards the locker rooms. I walked towards the building to
wait, with only one thing left on my
mind:
I have a date tonight.
