Deadly
Games
~Chapter
Twelve~
A
little over a month had gone by.
I had been ignoring Trey and hiding out in the bookstore.
It was the perfect safe-haven that Trey knew nothing about.
It also helped that David was always there.
I had never heard from Trey again after that night. I thought
that he had given up on me and moved on to something new.
The Christmas season came and went without anything new. I had
spent it with Ms. Mary, helping out at the shop, but seeing as it
was a holiday, very few customers came in. So instead, we sat
around, chatting and drinking tea and eating all the leftover
Christmas cookies.
Every day over break, Ms. Mary greeted me every morning with a
smile. David started showing up earlier to work so he could share
a coffee with me before he started work. I began to help him with
the few tasks Ms. Mary would actually give him, so it was
basically like I now worked there. Today, as we were sitting on a
sofa, looking at a magazine together, David read aloud a section
about a young girl with cancer who just got engaged to her
boyfriend, also with cancer.
The two stood, holding hands, their smiles engulfing their faces,
their skinny bodies glowing with joy. Both were undergoing
chemo.
The title read, “In Love with My Best Friend, Check!”
David looked at me, smiling.
I blushed and reached down to grab his hand. As I held it in
mine, he gave it a quick squeeze.
“Hello you two,” Ms. Mary came out of the back room
and shuffled over to us. Her sweet face smiled at us, revealing
exhaustion that I had never seen before. “I’m going
to go out for a cup of tea and some lunch. I’ll be back in
about an hour.”
She walked by us, patting David on the shoulder as she
passed.
We watched her pull on her jacket and shuffle down the street,
out of sight.
David slowly sat up and looked around. The shop had been slow all
morning.
He got up, and discreetly turned the shop sign from “Come
On In!” to “Sorry, We’re Closed!” I gave
him a funny, amused look as he walked back to me. He smiled as he
lowered himself next to me.
“Did you know that we met each other two and a half months
ago?” David asked, his eyes shy, his face adorable.
“I didn’t know that,” I smiled, titling my head
at him, my blond hair falling to the side. It had finally reached
the middle of my back.
“I’ve been keeping track,” he chuckled,
quietly. “It feels so much longer, though.”
My smile widened. “It does, doesn’t it?”
He pulled me close to him, whispering in my ear, “And
I’ve loved every minute of it.”
I felt his lips press against mine, gentle at first, and
deepening to more than just a simple kiss.
Every time David and I had been alone together, we’d gotten
more passionate.
His tongue formed next to mine, dancing with mine. I felt his
hand slip up my sweatshirt, rubbing the small of my back.
My hand slid its way into his shaggy black hair, twisting the
soft locks in between my fingers.
We stayed that way for a while, entranced by each other, until we
were interrupted by my phone on the coffee table buzzing insanely
loudly.
I pulled apart, my heart racing, his eyes hungry for more, and
turned to my phone.
I fixed my shirt as I checked the new message.
My body went numb as I read who it was from.
“New Message from Trey Churchill”
My stomach churned as I clicked “Read Now”.
The message read, “Well hey, Peppermint. Long time, no s*x,
eh?”
My heart dropped as I realized he hadn’t forgotten me nor
changed at all.
I took a deep breath before I finished reading the message.
“I’m thinking it’s time for Round Two
;)”
