English is the main language in America. Therefor everyone should at least know the basics before they come here. I don't think that everyone else should have to go out of their way to learn another language just for a few people who think that they don't have to.

However, I do think it's good to learn other languages. But I don't think you should have to know seventeen different languages just to have a conversation with someone.

I know English isn't the official language but I think everybody should learn it if they want to live here just because lack of communication can cause lots of problems. I mean all of our ancestors came from other countries & even though it was hard, they learned English because they wanted to live here. How is society supposed to function if people can't understand what somebody else is saying?

this is obviously about a different issue but since i'm not american it's STORY TIME
I hate it though when like say when I'm talking in my language with some family or something and then some steryotipical highschool popular chick will just be like "omg wtf are they doing not talking in english wtf this is canada"
um excuse you stop trying to eavesdrop on my conversation
I went to the park once with my friend and she was on the swing and her mom walked by and they started talking about one girl in their language so they couldn't hear and I got all paranoid that they were talking about me hahaha no they can't do that

if tons of people are in other countries are required to learn english to pass basic schooling, why do we make it so easy for people in our own country to get away with not speaking the english language? if i moved to say, mexico, i would take the freaking time to learn spanish. Nobody else in the country should have to be putting extra labels on the food so i can read it in english, nobody else should be having to get turned down jobs because they can't speak a language fluently that isn't even the main language of the country i'm in. yes. we should all learn different languages. There is a difference between going on vacation and not knowing a country's language and moving to the country and not knowing how to read and write the language. if i moved out of my native country to go somewhere else, i would learn to read and write in their language. the same should go for other people moving to the US.

So they make one desperate attempt to get into America. Most are unfortunate, sent back into Mexico. A few are lucky.
Mexicans don't steal your jobs. They do the jobs you people don't want to. Farming, packaging and so on. They're happy with minimum wage, its more than they would ever get back in Mexico.
Okay then. So they speak Spanish. They don't even try to speak English.
A lot of Mexicans actually attend night school to try and learn English.
'Let them stay in their own country if they can't speak our language"
Okay then, how about none of you go on holiday next year? Don't go to France unless you can speak it fluently. If you want to go to France for two weeks, learn the language.
I'm sorry but a lot of you are ignorant to this. If you had no money and no food, would you let yourself and your family die? Or would you take a chance in another country searching for a better life to support those you love? Next time you see an immigrant, why not ask them about their hard life?

i have no problem with them comming here as long as they do it LEGALLY! and it's different if you're going to live someplace and not just visit. also alot of people who are citizens also have hard lives, i understand that's it's nice to help out other people but when you're own people are in the same amount of trouble then help them first. take care of your own before you start giving handouts to foriegners

I honestly can't believe this is even a thing.

People speak a different language in our country, so? If you don't like it, don't speak to those people. Why should we force these foreign people to learn our language just because we can't understand theirs? I mean, honestly. English is the hardest language to learn, so to just simply learn it because some Americans have a problem with people speaking languages other than English for whatever reason, is just plain ridiculous.

In case you haven't noticed, the United States is very culturally diverse, henceforth having many different languages. English isn't the only language in the world that's acceptable, you know. Let people live their lives and speak whatever language they want and just get over it. You're not being forced to speak another language, so why force others?

I for one completely agree with this quote.

The only reason Spanish is becoming such a big deal is because of illegal immigrants. Which it's sort of rediculouw that we were told we had to learn Spanish in school so we could communicate with them.. No. I grew up in America like most Americans do speaking English. If you want to come to America legally or illegally learn English so you are able to communicate with us. Or stay where you're from. I wouldn't go live in a france cause I cannot speak French fluently.

Considering many people do speak English, it would be wise to learn how to speak English. My parents lived in Asia their entire lives and, long story short, moved to America and learned English. I get that you still wouldn't be able to speak English if you lived in America for only two years, but if you lived in America for 6+ years, it would be expected that you would know at least some basic English. I hate that how lazy people use the foreign language card as an excuse to not learn English. No, Americans speak primarily in English, so it would be wise to learn some English for your sake and the sake of everyone else.

i'm sick of people throwing that out there as an excuse for people to just come here and not learn english. america is a melting pot and i get that, my great grand parents came here from poland and ireland but you know what.. they learned english!!! i don't get why there is an exception with other people who come here in this generation. i mean you don't see my family walking around the streets speaking polish or gaelick (language of ireland) and even if they did they still speak english!!!!!!!!!!! the only reason people are to lazy to learn it nowadays is b/c we decided to make it easy for them to live with out it i mean i went to the store to buy saltines the other day and one side of the box was in english the other in spanish and every single freakin box was on the shelf so the spanish side was up i had to roatate the box to find out what it freakin said! and i went to the doctors for a physical the other day and under ethnicity the options were: " hispanic/latino or Non hispanic/latino" i mean so now you either are or you aren't there are no other ethnicities in the world. idc if you think this is it's pure fact and the fact that this is happening is FREAKIN PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
