Married in High School? - Chapter Twenty-Three

"Mom, Dad, this is Olivia. Olivia, these are my parents, Margaret and Steve," he said, as I shook hand with his parents.

"It's nice to meet you Mrs. and Mr. Harrison." I know what you're thinking, Collin and I have been together for two years, but we had only been seriously dating for the past year, so I had met his parents in passing, but not formally like this.

"Oh call me Margaret dear," his mother said, smiling at me. She had dark hair, and kind eyes with the wrinkled edges. She seemed really nice.

"And I'm Steve," his father said, shaking my hand as well. It had snow white hair, but a young face. He was taller than Collin, who must get his height from his mother's side.

It was a normal dinner with normal food, chicken and broccoli and rice. I was grilled with the usual questions from the parents: "Do you like school? What do you want to do after you graduate? Do you have a job?" et cetera et cetera. The highlight of the evening was going out to icecream with Collin after that.

"I'm sorry, but that cake tasted like cardboard," he laughed, referring to the cake his mother served as dessert.

"I didn't want to be rude so I took some," I giggled. "Do you think they liked me?" I asked quietly, almost hesitant to ask. Collin took a turn, almost to the icecream place.

"Of course they did babe," he pulled into the parking spot. "And even if they didn't, I love you, and that's all that matters." We smiled at each other, before I leaned in for a kiss. We got our usuals, moosetracks for me, coffee oreo for Collin. I tried to pay, but Collin insisted that he would. I appreciated that he wanted to be a gentleman and pay for everything, but I wish he would let me pay for the little things. That's why I usually got him a coffee when I was driving over to see him.

Behind the building were some picnick benches and we sat down, facing each other. We talked about the weather, about school, about random things. The sun was just starting to set, and it was breathtakingly beautiful. "Have you heard the sailor's saying?" Collin asked me, and I shook my head. "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning."

"I guess it's full speed ahead captain," I smiled, and he laughed.

"Full speed ahead first mate." We were quiet for a while, before Collin started to fill the silence again. "We should go see the sunrise sometime, on the beach. How awesome would that be?"

"That's a great idea!" I said, and in my excitment I flung icecream at myself. "Oops," I giggled. "I'll be right back." I walked quickly around to the front side of the building to get some napkins, and I nearly ran into Jesse.

"Hey princess, watch where you're going," he teased, laughing.

"Sorry Jesse," I smiled, trying to make it a friendly smile instead of a flirty smile. I walked by him to grab the napkins and he turned towards me.

"Hey I was thinking we could do something tomorrow, maybe catch a movie or grab something to eat," he suggested, trying to sound casual.

"I'm actually working tomorrow at the daycare," I lied, trying to avoid his gaze. I didn't want to lead him on, and going on a date was definitely going in the wrong direction.

"Oh cool, what about now? What are you doing?"

"Eating icecream," I laughed awkwardly, and he shook his head.

"I mean after this," he laughed.

"I'm...I'm here with-"

"Hey, did you get lost?" I heard Collin's voice behind me. I saw a brief flicker of hurt in Jesse's eyes before I turned to Collin.

"Hey I ran into Jesse. We're paired for the marriage...thing." I finished lamely, because I knew they were sizing each other and not paying attention to me. I put my hand on Collin's arm to get his attention. "Collin, this is Jesse, Jesse this is Collin," I said introducing them.

"Hey man," Collin said, holding out his hand. "Nice to meet you."

"You too," Jesse said, and then cleared his throat. "I should probably get going, see you later." He turned and left quickly. I shook my head, not knowing what to do with either of them.
