I Love to Hate You
Chapter 16
"Hey, I'm not feeling so great. I'm gonna go home." I said after dancing.
"Let me get my jacket." he said, starting towards the coat check.
"No, I need some to myself. I have to go call my brother." I said, a lump rising in my throat. Ever since Britney made that remark, I felt guilty. 
Part of the reason I left was because I couldn't handle having people feel sorry for me anymore. my mother had been so upset, and she was finally starting to move on. I was glad for her, but my brother couldn't seem toget past it. 
He and my father were close. They were very close. I didn't know what he was going to do after my dad died. He moped around for a while, then tried to get on with his life. But he couldn't. I told him I needed to start my life, and he told me he would try and start his. We made a promise to let each other know if we were doing well in life. And so far, I hadn't gotten a call from him. 
It's been two years. I haven't talked to him in two years. I feel terrible. 
I went home and dialed his number, kind of hoping he wouldn't pick up. 
What would I say to him? He did answer though. 
"Chris?" I asked, not believing it was him. He sounded so different. 
"Who's calling?" he asked. He didn't even recognize my voice. Did he even want to talk to me? He probably didn't want me in his life. 
"It's, uh, it's Carly." 
"Carly? Oh my god." he gasped. 
"Hey." I said, not sure what was coming next. 
"Wow. I didn't expect you to call." he said. Gosh, I was a terrible sister. 
"Chris, how are you?" I asked, afraid of the answer. 
"Honestly? I'm doing okay. I'm, uh, I'm engaged." 
WHAT?! I leave my brother, and he's depressed. I call two years later, and he's engaged? And didn't even call to let me know? 
"Wow. There's a suprise." I said, still shocked. 
"I was going to tell you. But I didn't think you wanted to hear from me. Look, I'm sorry if I ruined your life sis." he said. Oh no. 
"You didn't. Actually, I was calling about our promise." 
"So you're doing well in life?" he asked, and I could practically hear him smiling through the phone. He remembered. 
"I'm doing well. You should come visit." I said, meaning it. 
"Yeah, actually. I was going to tell you this, too. We're in England for about a month. Lucy's family live here, and we have news to share with them." he said. 
"Oh my gosh! You should definitely stop by!" I said, giving him my address. After talking for what seemed like another hour, I told him to call me later and hung up. I heard someone knock at the door. Zayn must have forgotten his key.
I didn't expect to see Liam when I opened the door. 
"Hi." I said, trying to catch my breath. 
"We need to talk." he said, walking into the flat and sitting on the couch. 
"Sure. What's up?" I asked, playing it cool.
"Look, I completely understand if you don't like me. But you don't have to go after my best friend. It's kind of hurtful to watch." he said.
"I'm not going after Zayn. He's just a really good friend." I said, stressing the last word. I can't believe Liam's doing this, right now. 
"While we're talking about things that are hurtful to watch, why did you bring Britney? I thought you were over us hating each other." I mumbled. 
"I needed some way to get your attention. You've been avoiding me!" he yelled. 
"Yeah, I have been. You can't just tell somebody that you've hated for the past five years that you have feelings towards them!" I screamed back. 
"I never hated you!" he hollered. What? 
"I NEVER hated you Carly. Can't you see? I've always wanted you. I've always been in love with you. Do you know how hard it is to watch the person you love hate you?" he asked, his voice going back to normal volume. 
"Stop. Just stop." I said, putting my hands up. 
"No. You can't just tell someone to stop loving you and expect them to do it." he said. Wait? He loves me? Could things get any more complicated?
"Liam, I said stop!" I said, raising my voice again. 
"Carly, you don't understand-"
"Liam, shut up." I said, my heart beating fast. 
"Make me." he replied. How old was he, five? 
But I accepted his challenge. I grabbed his head and pulled it close to mine, our lips meeting seconds later. He kissed me back, hard. 
I've been waiting so long to do this. 
Maybe I never really hated him. Maybe I loved him. 
Or maybe I loved to hate him.
