I Love to Hate You
Chapter 15
"Hey, are you okay? You don't have to go to this if you don't want to." Zayn said, his arm around my shoulders. I was trying not to cry, but it was just so hard.
"Yeah, I'll be fine. I just-I have bad history with Britney." I said. 
Zayn just shook his head, not pressuring me to go on. But I did anyway. 
"Remember how I told you about how Liam had talked to me that summer, then when we were back at school he ignored me and made fun of me?" I asked. 
He nodded, so I went on with my story. 
"Well, the first day of school was the worst. Because Liam told me over the summer that he liked me, but when he didn't talk to me, I knew something was up. So after first period, I saw him and Britney together. Making out right in front of me. It's like she was trying to rub it in, you know?" 
"I know exactly what you're saying. And I don't quite know why Liam would bring her back like this. Does he want you to hate him again?" Zayn asked. 
That's the thing. I didn't tell Zayn that Liam confessed his feelings to me. 
Because then Zayn would insist we stop fooling around, and I didn't want to. 
"I think he has mixed feelings towards me." I said, deciding to play it safe. 
"Well, let's forget about it for tonight. We're going to have fun. I hope you're ready to dance." he said with a wink. I laughed and leaned my forehead against his. We were so close, and alone in this cab, besides the driver. 
I pressed my lips to Zayn's and my heart fluttered. 
"Yeah. This is going to be a good night." he said, pulling away from me once we arrived. He got out of the cab first, then gave me his hand. I gladly took it and we held hands while walking into the grand building, which looked like a castle. There were a bunch of fans and paparazzi outside, snapping pictures. 
Zayn kept hold of my hand, and I kept my head down, until he told me to pose. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close. I looked up into his eyes, a wide smile on my face. He gazed into my eyes as well, and smiled.
We continued to walk into the building, then were escorted to the ballroom. 
"This is beautiful." I said, in awe, as we walked to our table. 
Of course the other guys and their dates would be sitting at the same table as us. But Zayn decided we would sit on the opposite side of Liam and Britney, because he didn't want me to have to put up with that. 
We sat and chatted for a while, and I stared around the room, not part of the conversation. Until Harry asked me a question. 
"So, how much did Zayn pay you?" he asked. 
"Excuse me?" I asked, laughing lightly. 
"There's no way Zayn could get a girl as beautiful as you for his date tonight." 
"You're so sweet. And way out of my league." I said, winking at him. He hung his head, pretending to be offended. 
"I'm joking Harry." I said, and he smiled. Soon, our meals came and we ate. 
I felt someone's hand on my upper thigh as we were eating. My eyes widened, and I turned my head towards Zayn, who was in the middle of a conversation with Louis. Sure enough, it was his hand. I grabbed it, which got his attention. 
"Let's dance." I said, getting out of my chair. 
We walked onto the dance floor just as the song was changing to a slow one. 
"I love this song!" I exclaimed as Whitney Houston's 'My Heart Will Go On' poured out the speakers. Zayn put his hand on my waist, and I put mine on his shoulder. Our bodies were so close, it took everything I had to not lean up and kiss him. He smiled at me, and I smiled back at him. As we were twirling around the room, I caught someone's gaze. Liam. 
He looked totally jealous.
