you guys know absolutely
nothing about self-harm.
there are countless different ways people hurt themselves. cutting is only
one of them. people burn, bruise, scratch -- literally anything hurtful you
can think of, they'll inflict it on themselves. whether you understand it or
not, people who self-harm like it. they like the feeling of it. they like how
it takes them to another place, away from their problems.
telling people to "just stop" when it comes to self-harm is so, so selfish
of you. it's an addiction. it's an addiction. IT'S AN ADDICTION. it should
not be so hard for you guys to understand but it seems none of you
understand addictions to begin with. whenever people make quotes
about smokers or drinkers or drug addicts there are tons of uniformed
wittians who comment stupid things like, "if you want to stop smoking,
just stop." if it was that easy nobody would smoke.
what i'm trying to say is you guys cannot make assumptions or jokes
about something you don't know. it's not your fault you don't under-
stand, but it is your fault that you're not trying to.

I agree that some people do not understand the matter. However, not all people on here aren't not trying to be more helpful. In my opinion, self harm is only something you can fully understand when you've experienced it first hand. I've never inflicted pain upon myself, but for a long time I have known many people that have, and that I have helped or attempted to help. It's extremely hard to understand if you don't have a desire for it. You learn more after a while, but I believe that you can only find out so much from knowing of it second hand. I think that many people do try to understand it, but can only come so far. They may make conclusions like the ones you stated out of ignorance and/or frustration for not being able to fully interpret what the person is going through. That's how I look at it, not trying to start anything though.

I kind of get the point that you're getting across. I burn myself, my sister scratches herself, my uncle is addicted to weed and depressed, my grandma is depressed and binges, my other uncle was an alcoholic and was addicted to weed, my aunts anorexic, and then there are tons of smokers. Don't tell me I don't know what an addiction is, because I do, I've seen it first hand. These things are life changing. And when people find out this stuff about anyone one of my family members and they simply tell them to stop, I'm thankful for that because at least they're saying SOMETHING. And most people do try to understand. Even the smallest thing, can make an impact. My dad had been smoking cigarettes since he was in 7th grade. When he was about 35, my sister came home from Kindergarten and they had Red Ribbon week (talks about the dangers of smoking and alcohol) and she told my dad to stop smoking because he'll die. My dad quit that day and hasn't smoked since. Smoking was an addiction, but because my sister said one thing, one time, he quit.
