"The heart does things for reasons which reason does not understand". Like love, for instance. How many high school couple do you see, and think to yourself, 'how the hell did those two get together?' We fall for the most unexpected people, for no particular reason. Sure, you have to couples where you can see exactly why they're together and how it happened, but then five metres to the right you'll have a jock and an artsy girl making out. You don’t choose who you fall in love with.

 

 

"We're here." were the words that pulled me out of a trance.

I looked up to see that the car had stopped moving. "Where exactly is here?"

 “My guess is as good as yours,” Matthew said. “But it looks nice, right? Come on,” cutting the engine and getting out of the car.

I stepped out, shut the door and turned to look at the brilliant green that was the park we had pulled up to. There were a couple of picnic tables and what appeared to be some sort of forest across the other side of a long paddock that could be used for playing all sorts of sport. It took me a second to figure out why this park looked so intimidating, and I never fully understood. It might have had something to do with the fact that it was all so, so green, whereas all other grass anywhere near my house or school was an odd shade of yellow due to lack of rainfall.

 

Matt walked around to my side of the car and took my hand. I looked up slightly at his face, and for the first time noticed the colour of his eyes. They were blue, but not sky blue or ocean blue, more like the colour one might paint the walls of their house, a navy sort of colour. They were the closest thing to black eyes I had ever seen and it scared me a little bit.

"Walk with me?" he said.

I smiled and nodded.

 

We walked for what seemed like hours, across the paddock and over to the bushland, where there was a well-worn trail that we didn’t walk on. He led me through the forest, neither of us speaking a single word bar a thanks when he moved a stray branch or helped me over a fallen log. I had no idea where he could possibly be taking me, or why, until finally we reached a clearing at the top of a mountain. I looked up to see the most beautiful view I had ever seen in my life. It was like being on top of the world, looking down on every natural beauty all in one spot. There was a crystal clear river running down the mountain adjacent to the one we were on, and everything in sight was just so green. There was still a glistening from the rain of that morning, adding an almost fairytale-like effect to the whole scene.

"It's… amazing!" I breathed, trying to take in everything around me.

"Kinda like you," Matt said.

Well that was cute.

 

I jumped when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out to see Rose's name on the screen. I sighed and opened the message.

"Hey gurl! Whatcha up too? :) was wondering if you wanted to go to a party tonight? Idk who's it is, but it's gunna be preeeetty good! Let me know! oxox"

I figured that I probably should go. After all, who was I to turn down an opportunity to socialise and get drunk. I looked up at Matt. Or, I could spend the rest of the afternoon with him, have an early night and actually feel good about myself in the morning.

I pressed reply. "hey rose :) sorry, I think I'll pass on this one. Have fun! Xo"

The next thing I did surprised even me. As I put my phone back in my pocket, I felt my thumb around to the side of it, flipping the off button, and turned back to face Matt. "So what are we doing here?"

As I asked that, he grabbed my hand again, pulling me close to him.

"This," he said. And that's when he kissed me.
