Twenty
Questions
Chapter

part
two
(italicized words means she's remembering what Carter told
her)
He said
it was one of the scariest moments of his life.
He had never heard a gun
being loaded in person, but he said he’d watched enough TV
to get the right idea.
He told me that his heart was
beating his ears, and it didn’t help when he could feel the
barrel being pressed up against his back.
He held his breath and risked
a glance in the shiny mirror to try and see who it was behind
him.
A little relief settled into
him when he realized it was the first man- my father- and not the
massive one he had stolen that box from.
“I’m gonna put
the gun away, but only after you give me that box.” he
explained to Carter.
Carter obeyed, shakily
handing the box over and breathing a sigh of relief as the gun
was removed from his back.
“What is it?”
Carter questioned.
“I don’t think I
have to tell you that, young man.”
“Well, could you at
least tell me why you let me go back out
there?”
“I had a feeling it
would be…worth it.”
“What’s that
supposed to mean? Did you know I was going to…”
Carter drifted off, not sure if he should continue and admit that
he stole that.
“Listen kid, I’m
not up for any game of twenty questions right now.” The man
said while peeking into the box, probably to check on whatever it
was.
Carter caught a glimpse of
it.
It was a gem of some
kind.
“Wow…” he
sighed.
And the man snapped the case
shut.
“What are you going to
do with that?”
“That isn’t your
business.”
“Well… are
you going to give it back to that man?”
“Who said it
wasn’t mine in the first place?” My father
retorted.
“How did he get it
then?”
“People steal things. I
got it back.”
“Well what is
it?”
“Enough
questions!”
Carter flinched at the
man’s sudden outburst.
The man looked apologetic,
but only for a second.
“What’s your
name, kid?”
“Carter.” He said
while standing up a little straighter.
The man nodded, and Carter
waited. He had expected the man to share his own name with him,
but he didn’t.
“Well…?”
he prompted.
“Well
what?”
“Your name? I told you
mine.”
“You should probably
get out of here.” My father said looking around the
restroom, suddenly very tense and cautious.
“Wait…me?
Why?” Carter asked, confused.
“Um…you just
should.”
And then there was a
bang…it sounded like it came from just outside the
restroom door.
My father swore under his
breath.
“Nevermind that,
you’re gonna have to come with me.” My father
whispered.
“But who-“ Carter
shut-up because of the look the man was giving
him.
Carter said that getting out
of the bathroom was a blur. He wasn’t sure how they had
gotten past whoever had been outside.
The next thing he knew they
were in an elevator going down.
They were on the second floor
and they were going down to the parking garage.
“Listen, when we get
off the elevator here I want you to act totally normal and just
walk out. Get on a bus or something and leave town. Don’t
worry about me, I have a car parked here. But you need to promise
me that you won’t stop because they could be right behind
us and if they see you, then there’s a 99.9% chance that
they’ll at least try to tail you.” The man
explained.
What had Carter- and my
father- gotten themselves into that
day?
